The only differance I think between a Ds and a Dsi is that the DSi is the newer version and you can take pictures. I am getting one for my birthday and was wondering myself which one to get but ive decided to go for the DS as I am only going to playing the game, not really bothered about taking pictures and the price is way cheaper.

The DS is the original model, the DSi is the newer model with improved features and specifications.

The DSi comes with 2 built in cameras, bigger screens, an online store called DSiWare where you can buy games, and it's slightly more powerful. As a result, there will be some games that you can only play on the DSi, and not the older DS.

The only thing the original DS has which the DSi does not, is a Game Boy Advance slot where you can play any old Game Boy games you own on the DS. So if your grandson has any Game Boy Advance games, it'll be something to consider.
