Bad day yesterday for the British women with Heather Watson and Harriet Dart losing.
Worse for Johanna Konta who had to withdraw due to a thigh injury, Her ranking will drop below Heather's as a result. Heather has never gone past the first round in the US Open so her ranking will stay much the same as at present. Because of the pandemic, rankings have been based on the last two years results. Where a result in a tournament in 2019 was better than in 2020, the 2019 result had overridden the 2020 result in the rankings. Johanna had got to the quarter-finals in 2019 which is why her ranking will drop below Heather's.

The new British number one, Emma Raducanu, is through to the semi-finals beating Belinda Bencic 6-3, 6-4.  She'll be against either Karolina Pliskova (seeded 4) or Maria Sakkari (seeded 17). She will be around 53 in the rankings.

She's the 3rd woman to get to the US semi finals outside the top 100, the others being Billie Jean King in 1969 and Kim Clijsters in 2009 and the first to get through via the qualifying rounds

She’s done brilliantly El …..and seems a lovely girl to boot ….and I think she’s the youngest Brit since Sue Barker

Emma Raducanu beat Maria Sakkari 6-1, 6-4 to get to the final. Her ranking shoots up to around 34.

First qualifier to reach a Grand Slam final.
First British woman to get to a major final in 44 years, and the US final in 53 years.
Youngest British Grans Slam finalist in 62 years.
Only the fourth British woman to get to a Grand Slam final in the Open era.

Her opponent is the other teenager, Leylah Fernandez who is a couple of months older than Emma but has been on the professional circuit longer.

Johanna Konta has pulled out of next week's tournament at Chicago and the Indian Wells tournament the following week due to an ongoing injury. May not be playing for the rest of this year.

Emma Raducanu won't be in the Chicago tournament, yet to decide for the Indian Wells one, but is on the entry list for the one in Moscow which is after the Indian Wells one.

Emma Raducanu is in the Indian Wells tournament via a wildcard. The entry list for that had been published during the US Open so she was out of the automatic places at that time though obviously would have been if the list had been published afterwards,. She's also on the entry list for the Moscow and Romanian tournaments later in October.

Heather Watson is also in the India Wells tournament.

Emma Raducanu's opponent in the second round is Aliaksandra Sasnovich who has a ranking of 100, Whoever wins is likely to be playing the number 1 seed Simona Halep.

Emma lost in straight sets. First match in 27 days and still very inexperienced at the senior level. Before the US Open she had said that she knew that she would lose matches and would gain experience from that.

Not surprisingly Emma Raducanu was announced this morning as one of the six contenders for BBC's Sports Personality of the Year. The others are Tom Daley, Tyson Fury, Adam Peaty, Raheem Sterling and Sarah Storey. Emma is the bookies favourite by a long way.

Though her day hasn't gone well as she has tested positive for Covid and so has withdrawn from an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi.
