Better start for day 2. Heather Watson beat Kristyna Pliskova 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-3), a hard match due to Heather getting less match practice due to the hotel confinement. 4 days ago she had a spasm in her left leg during practice and had been concerned she wouldn't be able to play.

Second round opponent is Anett Kontaveit, seed 21.

Francesca Jones who was knocked out in the Australian Open is playing in the Phillip Island tournament this week and has won her first round match. This is her first WTA tour win. She beat Zheng Saisai who is ranked 44 so this also her first win over a player in the top 100. Also this win means that she will break into the top 200 for the first time.

Katie Boulter lost to Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in the first round of the Monterrry Open.
A British player will get through to the second round as Heather Watson and Harriet Dart (who got through the qualifiers) meet later today.
The Monterry Open tournament is held between the Indian Wells tournament (which was postponed) and the Miami Open which starts next week. The Indian Wells and the Miami Open tournaments are WTA1000 events which are the tier immediately below the Grand Slam events.

British team announced for the Billie Jean King Cup play off against Mexico on the 16th & 17th.  This is the revamped Fed Cup.
Team is Heather Watson, Harriet Dart, Katie Swan, Jodie Burrage and Katie Boulter. Johanna Konta is out due to a longstanding knee problem which means that she has to limit the number of tournaments she's in.
Mexico is without their top player.

If Britain wins, they would go through to a one off qualifier next February, the winners would go through to the 12 teams finals next April.

Harriet Dart lost her third qualifier so just Johanna Konta and Heather Watson in the main draw,
Johanna Konta (current ranking 20) is drawn against Sorana Cirstea (61)
Heather Watson (71) is drawn against Zarina Diyas (93)

Don't know what's happened regarding Katie Boulter. Had been playing ITF matches to improve her rankings but hasn't played since the beginning of the month - she had reached the semi-final in a tournament in the States but retired from it at the end of the first set.

Johanna Konta has just won the final at Nottingham . It's the first WTA win for a British player on home soil in 40 years (Sue Barker in October 1981 in Brighton indoors) and the 4th WTA title for Johanna (first since the Miami Open in April 2017).

Not such a good week for Heather Watson being beaten by Katie Boulter and then in Katie's following match she had to retire with an arm injury.

This coming week, it's the Birmingham classic, the following week Eastbourne and then it's Wimbledon. Heather Watson, Harriet Dart and Francesca Jones are the three British players in the Birmingham classic.

Katie Swan (ranking 290) is one match away from qualifying for the main draw at Wimbledon.

Johanna Konta (30) and Heather Watson (65) are in the main draw.
Also quite a number of British players have had wild cards to the main draw so didn't need to go through qualifying - Katie Boulter (217), Jodie Burrage 270), Harriet Dart (141), Francesca Jones (210), Samantha Murray Sharan (226), and Emma Raducanu (336).

Wow! That;s going to be fantastic for the UK players , for the experience even if they don't progress very far, I take it there are so many wildcards because of Covid!

There do seem to be more wildcards this year, but the number is similar to those at the other Grand Slams this year. Wildcards are made at the discretion of the Wimbledon committee. The higher number may be due to the 2020 Wimbledon being cancelled or it may be due to some overseas players not being prepared or allowed to come here.

Fewer number of wildcards for the men's singles, the best known being Andy Murray of course.

Draw for Wimbledon:
Top half of draw
Johanna Konta v Katerina Siniakova (third round opponent likely to be the number 1 seed Ashleigh Barty)
Sorana Cirstea v Samantha Murray Sharan
Emma Raducanu v one of the qualifiers
Francesca Jones v Coco Gauff !!
Bottom half of draw
One of the qualifiers v Heather Watson (second round opponent would be Sloane Stevens or Petra Kvitova)
Elisa Mertens v Harriet Dart
Jodie Burrage v Lauren Davis
One of the qualifiers v Katie Boulter (second round opponent likely to be the number 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka)

Katie Swan's qualifying match was due to have started but has been delayed due to rain.

Forecast for the start of Wimbledon is bad for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and it's quite possible that little will be played before Thursday. That's per the BBC weather pages.
