I know all about this. Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

I absolutely did not rip that off from reiki.org.

I think it probably does have a placebo effect, as in if you think it will help it probably will.

That's what I mean, I don't wanna go parting with shekels for it to be an hour of shite

It's been recommended to me, but I'll ask the physio and see what he says (he's like something straight out of GI Jane, no messin about. I'm surprised he hasn't got me to shave my head)

Karma I have tried it here were I live and it did not work for me I went to visit my aunt who lived in the Isle of Sheppy she knew someone in Kent who she said was very good and took me to see him,he was a very spiritual man and would not accept money from anyone even though he earned a pittance in his day job,he did not help me with my pain but he did give my spirit a lift I felt so much better within myself when I left I dont know why I just did, he has helped my aunt and others and is very respected,I say anything is worth a try if it helps I have tried many alternatives unfortunately they have not worked for me but they have worked for others

Thanks Marg x I'm gonna check with the doc first cos I don't wanna try it if it's not gonna help how I need it to x

Lecs, yeah it's gone nuclear mate. The Fentanyl's stopped working on its own. Have heard of the pain management thing before but haven't got my appt with the pain clinic till May My GP's the only one who can speed it up so it's more bleedin faffin about and chasing people to chase other people! You see if I was a Hollywood film star I'd have my own PA to do all this for me. I'd have been hobbling up that red carpet last night with a face like a walnut but at least I would be in bloody Cartier and someone else would be speaking to my GP on my behalf!

One of my friends used to bang on about Reiki all the time..  but she was a bit odd like that (she went on the Big Breakfast once to talk about the ghost in her house... it was verrry cringy to watch).  When she talked of Reiki I would just smile & nod along politely...   She reckoned she couldn't Reiki people, but she could Reiki cats

Her Reiki knowledge came from someone she knew, who practised Reiki..   from what I understood you have to be gifted or have received the gift of Reiki to be able to do it.     Its basically a  laying on of hands...  to heal.

I was still dead skeptical.

Then I met this bloke at a party she had at her house...   I can't remember why, but he ended up just laying his hands on my shoulders (we were standing in the kitchen... as you do at parties)..   and I swear the heat that came from his hands & shot down my body...    it wasn't unpleasant...  it was like nothing I have ever felt before or since.    So much as I my logical mind doesn't want to believe in it..   I have felt it, it was too strong a sensation for it to be a result of suggestion or the wotnot.

Karms..   Give it a go..  its totally passive & non invasive.   I can't see how it could do any harm.

[another anecdotal story..]

when I had all me hair chopped off a few months ago, I was talking to my hairdresser.   She ended up telling me about how she has Ankylosing Spondylitis..   and had been on tramadol & morphine patches and other strong meds for years.   However, for the past year she had been med free..  she said she had had enough of the ever increasing meds...  and that being all the doctors would do for her..   so she decided to try alternative therapies.    It was acupuncture that did it for her (she said "it doesn't work for everyone, but it does for me").   She has acupuncture every 3-6 months.

She went cold turkey on the meds ...  something she said she wouldn't advise anyone to do.   Said it was like that scene from trainspotting with the baby on the ceiling.

There is a point to this story (honest)...   I think as long as the therapy is quite passive, and not going to aggravate a condition and make things worse, then if you are having to live with chronic pain it has to be worth giving a few of them a go.

I couldn't hack it Karma...   I was only laid up for a few months with "moderate to high" pain levels & I wanted to chop my own arm off..      I think you should definitely try the Reiki xx

My (internet) friend with my condition went cold turkey off Oramorph, reading her account was horrific...the pain, the...well everything. Made me so glad I've never had to take hardcore pain relief.

I've got the (not uncommon with EDS) quirk of local anaesthesia not doing a scooby to me but owt over a co codamol knocks me sideways

Now that's interesting Dits, cheers for that. You're right, can't hurt to see, eh? Acupuncture is barred cos my thing is nerve and muscoskeletal related (physio GI Jane man he say no).

Fentanyl's getting titrated up again. One day I swear I'm gonna start to levitate with the amount of crap in my system You lot will be typing away and you'll hear this noise of a sharp cackle followed by an eclipse and it'll be me

Karma! Reiki's well worth a go .. as Marg says,it can give you a bit of a mood boost that can help.. and most folk find it really relaxing. It certainly won't do any harm ( where bodywork therapies might) and could do a lot of good. You don't have to pay over the odds for it either ( in fact sometimes you don't have to pay at all! http://www.jikidenreikiuk.com/meetingsandevents.htm) - shop around ! Check your nearest college too - they might run the VTCT Level 3 Reiki course,(I think ITEC do a Reiki course too) and be looking for clients .

I found it helped take the edge off pain ( I had undiagnosed intracranial hypertension-  BIIIIG constant  migraine and really severe spinal nerve pain ) and helped manage it. Acupuncture was the biz too, and your doc should be able to refer you to a medical acupuncturist  on the NHS.
