Yes. Some of them pass without problem, some pass, causing extreme pain, and others are too large to pass and require intervention. Google "Renal calculi" for more info on them.

I've been googling for hours now but I'm really starting to scare myself - i'm worried it could be something more serious!!

They are incredibly painful.... rolling around in agony painful! Hug

But treatable. I was 7 months pregnant when I had mine, and they were quite small, so they made me 'pass them' ((shudder)).

But my dads were larger, so he had to have lithotripsy (sp)... which is where sonic waves break the stones down first, and then they put in a stent (drain).

Please don't worry too much Pretty, well thats stupid thing to say... cos its distressing, but if it is kidney stones, then she will be ok.
Hug

she was in so much pain this morning - it really was frightening!!

I've heard they're really painful, but they're fairly straightforward to deal with , hope they get her sorted out soon.

I had them once PP... don't get too scared yet... I was taken to hospital in incredible pain (and I've known pain), given pethadrine (sp?) and told it can be more painful than childbirth... I've not had kids... but it was really bad. Turns out I'd probably passed it by the time I called 999. I was in hospital for a couple of days though. Hug

My friend's stone was very large which was why she was in so much pain. The right medication helped her pass it eventually. I hope the person you know gets relief very soon

I had a kidney stone(was told it was large, I saw it and thought it was weeny.. size of a pea) Hug and I have never known pain like it, ( I have given birth 4 times!!) but as soon as I got to hospital they gave me morphine, and the pain went away.. I had to have it removed, I was asleep for that! and I was right as rain in a couple of days... please don't worry about your mum she is in the right hands.. once they give her pain medication she won't have any pain...

PP they may be trying to explain what a kidney stone is, that is, as I recall, a build up of minerals to a deposit as a result of passing through the kidney from digestion. I was probably kept in hospital to ensure there was no infection instead. That will probably easily be treated as they will be able to tell with blood and urine tests if she has one. Try not to worry.

My daughter had them when she was about 10. She felt really sick and was crying with the pain (unusual for her). There was also blood in her urine. I took her to the hospital and she was kept in for two nights - the first night for pain control and because she had a temperature. She had ultasound the next day, thats when they found the kidney stones. It was advised that she let them pass naturally, which she did. She uses a commode anyhow because she's disabled and the stones were collected. They were calcium stones apparently, but I believe you can get different types and some can be 'blasted' to make them easier to pass.
Dont worry too much, they will sort it out Nod

Yep mine were calcium too. Apparently some people are "stone formers!"

I have to watch my calcium intake to stop it happening again.

But to have them at 10 yrs old.. poor girl!
