It's a shame we don't celebrate our Patron Saints day especially in the way the Irish celebrate St Patrick's Day.
Wishing you all a great day anyway

Happy Birthday Zazz's Mum!
As for St George, we don't really have any traditional celbration though I noticed cubs and scouts marching in my hometown.
I much prefered May Day and of course the local minaz gorler.
Couldn't give a stuff about any of the saints days. The Irish one seems more designed for the brewing industry to sell Guinness more than anything else. The English, rather sensibly, tend to ignore this silly day that has no real or historical significance.
Reading this Guardian article I find it hard to stomach all the guff about empire, which although British, the English obviously played a staring role within.

Bloody hell!
Ah George Monbiot at it again.
I don't think that there is any mileage in this sort of material. It's typical colonialism and also applies to France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and especially the Belgians. I'm also given to understand that Genghis, Ogdai, and co were pretty heavy dudes too. I suspect that there aren't many countries who want to dwell on their past.

Except for us, when it comes to WW2!
My late dad fought in world war 2,despite me and him getting a bit merry of an evening now and then he never went into detail of what he saw and did during that time, despite my prompting. He was in North Africa with the desert rats etc as a medical orderly, gawd knows what sights he saw.he died in 1985.
ha ha
Monbiot is always interesting to read in my experience. While his views are no doubt predictably left wing and must make many roll their eyes, he's often spot on. Sorry Garage Joe!

It dates back to his blinkered attitude towards King Coal. Nothing left wing about that.
I am watching Heir Hunters. There was a story this week about a guy who just died aged over 90. He fought in the Second World War. He came back a broken man, shell-shocked, mentally disturbed, homeless and spent the rest of his life in a mental hospital and then a nursing home. He fought for his country against Hitler and the atrocities that the Nazis were committing and although he didn't die during the war there is no doubt that he died because of the war. Yes it was a war that we had to fight and it was indeed a just cause.
It's a very true saying indeed those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
