I was wondering how long it would take someone to post this.
Ken Dodd is not normally associated with deep thought to perplex the mind.
However he once said if you want to hear genuine laughter go and stand outside a junior school. It's probably the happiest sound you'll hear.
Too true - I can often hear the local school from our garden and break time is filled with laughter.

I agree, Sainty, children’s laughter is wonderful.

Did you know Doddy recently turned 90? C5 are showing over 3hrs of programmes on Sunday night as a tribute: a 2hr profile, followed by an "Audience With..." performance.
Actually, I disagree with that "not normally associated" line: he's often considered one of the best "thinkers" amongst his peers in terms of analysing what makes us laugh (Bob Monkhouse was the other one - the closest we've got amongst more recent comedians is probably Jimmy Carr). Dodd has often talked about how - once he'd decided he wanted to be a comedian - he went to the library and read everything he could about it; not just joke books but all aspect of it, such as the biology and psychology of laughter.
IIRC, that observation about children's' laughter was part of a wider treatise in which he saw laughter as a spectrum, which ranges from the pure "white" laughter of children through other colours to "blue" jokes and the "black" humour of satire and offence.
And of course Dodd is famous for analysing humour in other ways, such as his "Giggle Map", which shows what kind of jokes are popular in different places around the UK, and his use of "TPM" ("Titters Per Minute") to measure and control his performances.
[And yeah: it's sad and a sign of the times, but I think he'd be very careful nowadays to avoid lines about "hanging around outside schools"... ]
Really interesting post, Eugene. I didn’t know any of that.
Re bit in brackets: a sad sign of the times indeed

"Wider treatise" now that made me laff.
Altogether a smidge too serious

Well, isn't that the point?
Doddy would be pleased.

Well, yeah: it's sort of compulsory when discussing the analysis of humour to quote E. B. White:
"Analyzing humor is like dissecting a frog. Few people are interested and the frog dies of it."
I was just trying to make the point that the likes of Ken Dodd, Bob Monkhouse and Jimmy Carr really do take humour very seriously, and do think very deeply about it. However they're a lot funnier when explaining it than I am...

I saw that sign down town last week. I went in, dropped my shorts and was promptly arrested. However, after pointing at the sign in the window they decided to drop all charges.

Yeah, I know what you mean.
I think the giveaway is that vision express are a big company. If it was a small independent opticians you could imagine a mistake getting through, but vision express would order hundreds of posters. You'd therefore expect either a lot of similar photos or - more likely - that someone would have spotted the mistake earlier and halted the advertising campaign.

What a great thread yogi!
I agree- sunrises, sunsets, moon, stars... the beach, the forests, walking my dog, craft projects, candle light, hot baths, music, snacks, gardening, exercising, friends... I love life

Not wanting to labour the point ... its actually my thread in another guise.
"Little things that make life great" - aherm!!
However - i'm ok with that
I love and become a little transfixed with moonlight - especially if its bouncing off the rooftops. On the way to work there was a steep hill and on a clear night the moon would light up the road and the fields on either side - it was magical.
And then there's realists...........

Did you miss the thread title, it’s the Happiness thread!
What’s unrealistic about any of this?
It’s about finding joy in the little things in life, it’s about finding happiness with people you love and finding beauty in nature.
Better than being miserable.

My tumble dryer is in the garage and when I go out to lock the side door on winter evenings, I often stand and gaze at the moon and the stars - really beautiful.

Sounds blissful, Summer
Candle light
Deep baths
Tickling children
A big old dog
Pipe smoke
Kicking your shoes off at the end of the day
Laughing so hard, I cry
. . . and a beautiful old building - I have a thing for architecture and heritage

I've seen a shooting star
I was chatting with a friend late at night and just happened to look up
It was way-way up and hardly noticeable
I didn't say anything . . .
