My local council collects garden waste at specific sites around the borough on certain days throughout the spring/summer months, now, in their inifnite wisdom they want every household to buy a "green" bin for ÂĢ20 which they will empty fortnightly in the spring/summer. Rip off or encouraging recycling?

(i was going to post a "gentle/calming" thread to keep the peace and promote harmony, but then thought what the eck i'm not modding in here)

They want you to BUY it?    Cheeky beggars!    We've a green, grey, blue and brown bin here - and rumours of a red one to come.    bloomin' sure I'd not be buying one though.

We've had that over here for a while now...it works great.  We have 3 bins, compost (which we never use coz we have an actual composter down the back of the garden), green bin and black bin.  The green bin is collected every 2 weeks and is free, so we pile everything (recyclable) thing we can into the green bin, which means we don't have to put the black bin out as many times as we used to, which has saved us money *breathes*

ÂĢ20 is too much, IMO. I have a bin for general waste, a bin for paper, cardboard, cans etc, and a green waste compost bin. Didn't have to pay for any of them! It's unfair to slap that cost onto households when we pay council tax for this type of thing.

we have a blue bin (recycling) and green (rubbish), they state that they are not required by law to dispose of "green waste" and are therefore able to charge ÂĢ20 for a bin

I never thought I'd appreciate our council!    We've plastic and tin recycling, paper, green and landfill - and word on the street is we're getting a glass one.  Pity people who have tiny gardens though.

I've got a grey bin for ordinary waste, a green bin for garden waste and a blue recycling bin with a caddy in it in which papers go and all other stuff goes in the body of the bin.

As my grey bin only needs putting out every two weeks (there's only me in the house) I put the recycling and the grey one out the same day

There was no charge, apart from paying our council tax.

Oh I forgot about that. That's what probably paid for mine then

We have a brown bin for garden and food waste.

A blue box for glass and tins.

A large green bag for plastic.

A white bag for paper.

A black bin for anything which can't go into the recycling bin/box/bags.

We didn't have to pay for any of them.

Machel, what did you mean in your OP when you said you aren't modding in here, where are you modding?

Our council(Birmingham) is the worst for recycling - we still put black bags out once a week on a Tuesday and on a Friday we alternate between green waste (grass cuttings, leaves but no soil attached) in a see through green plastic bag and paper/cardboard the other week which we're supposed to have a container for but my end of the road has never been given one so it goes out in a Sainsbury's heavy duty shopper
