I suppose they were the loyalty card of their day.
I recall my parents having books of them.
Watching the Likely Lads tonight triggered the memory.
Apparently it was known that sometimes women presented themselves into A&E and that there was much hilarity when stamps were found where an intimate investigation was done. CocoCola bottles were another injury in similar circumstances.
I hasten to add I was not one of these patients but I promise it was told to me by an A&E doctor I knew!

Now I've heard of all sorts of stories like that, but never Green Shield stamps!
I remember them though- and Co-op divvie stamps too.
Top gift was a Ford Granada in light green
Promise you, a trainee doc I knew told me. She might have liked the gag though.
I'll never forget that metallic blue Maserati Bora.
Then I moved on to passports.
Greater rewards for much less effort.
My dad collected them
My Nan used to collect Green Shield Stamps and used to save them up for one mega licking session. It was a real highlight for me and my sister to be filling up the books. Then we'd look through the catalogue before going on the bus with her to the show roo to collect maybe a clock or sheets/towels. Kids today would probably be bored ot of their brains but we found it so exciting.
I worked in a local corner shop at the weekends when i was still at school.the shop gave them out,I think you could only get them with groceries (food etc) not cigs or newspapers. The rate was one stamp for every 6d spent(about 2 and half pence now.)
So it was four stamps for two bob.I remember once this wifie went off her nut at me for "short changing" her stamps, accused me of putting them under the counter for myself. I didn't by the way.

I was going to ask Xochi how the stamps were used to "entertain", but then I realised Soozy provided the answer.
It was really exciting when my mum had done a big shop and got one big stamp to stick in the middle of the page.
Easily pleased, me!

I read similar story quite a few years ago where a woman had gone for her smear test & had gone for a tinkle before going in. Unfortunately there was no loo roll for the post pee dabbing & so she had rutted in her handbag for a tissue. Anyway to get to the point a stamp was stuck on the tissue and was transferred to her fanangela during the dabbing and duly found by the smear technician.
