There is a certain amount of expertise in the toasting and the topping of a crumpet, I agree..... 

go on then....  gimme the recipe!  They're one of those things I want to like and keep thinking I'll try them only to be disappointed.

Need to toast them for longer than it says on the packet and add your own topping. grated cheese is nice too

Light a fire in the grate, get a toasting fork, sit legs akimbo in front of the fire. prong the crumpet on toasting fork and slowly brown on one side......mop brow, and turn crumpet around on the fork and slowly toast the other side.....and with a red face slaver in butter and enjoy.....

oh now that sounds nice.... apart from not having a fire and if i got down in front of one, I'd probably not be able to get up again.
