Personally, I think it was more in edit than anything really bad Mrs Beard did..the ice cream was not set and wasn't likely too..she should have said here's your ice cream Ian, but didn't. More explanations here from Sue Perkins

The Great British Bake Off's stars have waded into "Bingate", which saw contestant Iain Watters booted off the show after he went into meltdown over a bad bake and tossed it in the bin.

Iain lost his cool and threw away his Baked Alaska after its ice cream filling failed to set and stormed out of the tent, leaving him with nothing to show to judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood.

Fans of the show tweeted their sympathy and outrage at Iain being voted off, with many rounding on fellow contestant Diana Beard, who had removed his effort from the freezer during the Baked Alaska challenge, but presenter Sue Perkins stood up for her.

Sue tweeted: "Iain's Alaska was out of the freezer for 40 secs. That's it. No sabotage. 40 secs of normal temp would NOT be enough to reduce it to liquid."

She continued: "I can't actually believe I'm wading into this... (And wading is the operative word...) Big love to @iain_watters anyhow. What a gent x

"All getting a little inflamed for my liking. Am off. This is a show about CAKES. Please, let's save the ire for real stuff. Peace & out x"

Paul added: "At the end of the day Mary & I need something to judge, it's not about melted ice cream but about what's presented to US... #bingate

"I'm glad Mary's not on twitter this would upset her.. #enoughnow"

But Iain himself was gracious in defeat, tweeting: "THANK YOU @BritishBakeOff it's been truly EPIC. What can I say guys - I had a #MELTDOWN. Thanks for the support. #BINCIDENT #GBBO".

During desserts week, the show's bakers had to make a self-saucing pudding, a tiramisu cake and then the tricky Baked Alaska - incorporating sponge and ice cream filling inside a merengue. Searing temperatures in the tent saw fillings melt and merengues wobble.

Iain said of his time on the BBC show: "My worst moment has to be 'bin-cident'. I didn't handle the pressure in the tent as well as everyone else. It was a very hot day with everyone fighting for space in the freezers, and I didn't feel that I coped with the situation very well.

"I am passionate as a personality and a baker, so I do tend to get frustrated when the bakes don't go well, and I will have to learn to deal with that."

Iain is the fourth contestant to go from the Bake Off after Jordan Cox, Claire Goodwin and Enwezor Nzegwu were voted off in previous weeks.

I honestly think it was edited to look worse than what actually happened, he phoned her three days later to tell her to watch out the knives were out...we don't even know if she said sorry because of the editing...its all for drama

Mrs Beard said it had been edited to make it look as though she deliberately sabotaged her rival's chances by taking the dish - ice cream baked inside meringue - out of the freezer on purpose so it would melt.

She said today she was the victim of a 'stitch-up' by the BBC and sobbed after watching the episode - but did not reveal she had left so it was not spoiled for Bake Off fans.

A BBC spokesman told MailOnline: 'Diana will not appear in the rest of the series as she fell ill ahead of filming episode 5 earlier this year.

In the fallout from last night's show the BBC said it had received 556 complaints already from the eight million who watched - with some viewers branding her 'evil' when Watters left instead of her.

She also said that Iain had telephoned her to warn her that she would be in the firing line and burst into tears after watching the show last night.

'I've been stitched up, haven't I?', she told BBC Radio Shropshire.

She said: 'We were 12 amateur bakers, no prize money involved. Why would I want to sabotage Iain's Baked Alaska? I was very pleased to get through the first week - everything after that was a bonus.

'Iain does not hold me responsible at all for his failed ice cream. In fact, he rang me three days ago to warn me that the knives were out'.

I wonder how much is in the edit, after all the producers could have seen this as an opportunity to "sex-up" the programme and in some respects the furore seems to have garnered considerable copy.

Given that there appears to be some behind the scenes activities we don't see for example the judges having pre-filmed access to the contestants signature bakes I would not be surprised that the producers manage the series narrative as it goes along.

I didn't think for a minute she wanted to sabotage him, it just seemed such a thoughtless thing to do. There's always some idiots who have to go overboard. As for Ian, I got the impression that he did initially blame her. I would have.

Daily Telegraph report with Mary Berry confirming it was out for less than a minute

However, Mrs Beard was staunchly defended by her fellow contestants, as well as the Bake Off judges, who said the pudding had only been out of the freezer for only 40 seconds before it was seen melting.

Mrs Beard claimed she felt the “knives were out” for her on the programme.

“They painted me [as if] I have lost my integrity,” she told BBC Radio Shropshire. “Anybody that knows me knows I haven't that bone in my body. So I've been stitched up, haven't I?"

Martha Collison – who at 17 is the youngest contestant on the show – said: “Things are not always what they seem on TV, Diana is an absolute legend, and the lack of freezer space was none of the bakers fault [sic].”

Mr Cox said: “It [the problem] was crap freezers. Poor Diana is a scapegoat for BBC.”

Berry described the claim that Mrs Beard had deliberately sabotaged the ice cream as "absolute rubbish."

She said: "It was very tense on the day because imagine: the sun was shining, it was a really warm day, and that was the day they were making ice cream. But they all tackled it well. Remember they're all in the same boat. And we had freezers and it's just a matter of managing them. And they had to get ahead right at the beginning.

“And Ian, it was so unfortunate, because he is without doubt a brilliant baker and we saw a great future for him, but if you can't present something at the end, what can we judge him on it?”

A BBC spokesman said: “As shown in the episode, Iain became the fourth baker to leave the tent because he didn't present Mary and Paul with anything to judge in the show-stopper challenge and both judges were very clear about the reasoning behind the decision.

"Due to the extreme temperature in the tent that day, many of the bakers struggled to get their ice cream to set as seen in the episode. Diana removing Iain's ice cream from the freezer for less than a minute was in no way responsible for Iain's departure.”

Crikey! I can't believe how huge the fall out from this is

Even if it was only 40 seconds, she still shouldn't have done it and should have apologised when she realised what had happened. She didn't seem bothered by what was happening to him and if it was a case of us just not seeing an apology due to editing, surely we would have heard about it from everyone else involved.

I don't wish her any ill, i would hate to see her be unwell because of public internet trashing but even before bin gate, I had already thought she was smug and I didn't like her.

Sweet, everyone concerned said she was not at fault, the BBC said she wasn't too blame Ian said she wasn't to blame, the ice cream was not setting..I'm more angry at the edit than her or him for storming off. She's 69 and been made to look a cheat and they wouldn't show an apology because they wanted it to look that way. I didn't like either of them, but that's not to say she should take the wrap for what happened

Bit late in the day for the BBC to say it wasn't her fault after they edited it to make it look that way, I hope she is ok  Haven't a clue who is on tomorrow sweet, I keep forgetting to watch
