It's pastry week. Signature challenge is samosas. Technical challenge is met with blank looks and rolled eyes. Showstopper is a pie suitable for a banquet.

Hopefully no-one makes a lamprey pie  There is a very old tradition where a bake in Gloucester creates a lamprey pie for the ruling monarch. That goes back to medieval times and still continues. One was sent to the Queen back to 2015 to mark when she became the longest reigning monarch.

 

Lampreys are a sort of fish, rather like an eel. Back in 1135 Henry I died from what was described as "a surfeit of lampreys".

Yes, Ngaio Marsh did write such a book. her 10th with Inspector Alleyn. It's quite possible I read it many years agp as my parents had quite a number of her detectibe novels. Not surprisingly, the title is a reference to the fate of Henry I.
