Demantoid, my understanding is that GB is definitely standing down and that he is asking for the procedure to select a new leader to start. His reason for standing down is to make it possible for the Lib Dems to form a coalition with Labour.

Presumably assuming that the coalition is agreed over the next few days, then the Prime Minister will be Harriet Harman as she is deputy leader of the Labour Party.

If a coalition is not agreed then a minority Conservative government will be formed.

I think we can expect a bad day for the pound and for the stock market tomorrow - I don't think it is a coincidence that this announcement was made once the markets in the UK had closed today.

The lib dems up in Scotland are not happy that their leader is considering jumping into bed with Cameron, grass roots are threatening to vote Labour at the next Scottish election, think that's next year.So that will upset the balance up here as the SNP and Lib dems are in coalition at the moment.
Heard that the Tories were offering Scottish Secretary to the lib dems at Westminster ,that won't wash much. Tories have only one Westminster MP up here anyway. My neighbour always votes Lib dem and she is raging at Clegg.

I agree Dame, the guy on sky news said It was him that caused the credit crunch

The Tory press and media have never given him a chance. I just think it's a darn shame that we are now going to have a Labour leader that might have the image but not the heart that Gordon Brown had... all in all I don't think we've had it that bad in the last 13 years.

Fed up of sky news, just last night my Dad said he sent in a complaint about the treatment of that protestor and the way they told him to "go home". Now Adam Boulton has thrown his toys out the pram. They been so biased through the whole thing and he has been rude towards people. He's been calling Gordon Brown a waste of space through the whole election.

It was probably inevitable that GB was gonna step down anyway ....this has simply hastened his annoncement. I have nothing but admiration for the man ..a truly dignified, honourable, principled and above all honest politician. All those screaming for him to vacate No 10 immediately should thank their lucky stars that we still have a man holding the fort who genuinely cares about the future of this country and not his own position.

It was a very dignified speech IMO. Just a shame that he doesn't do designer suits and fancy haircuts ...it seems to be what people want.

Il try get you a clip of it lockes, it will be uploaded some where... no doubt about it. I only managed to catch the end. They have clashed in the past both Boulton and Campbell when Alistair Campbell pointed out they side with the conservatives. I managed to catch Boulton shouting "Don't tell me what I think!" and Jeremy Thompson had to intervene, of course being sky news he sided with Adam Boulton and said Alistair Campbell was being unreasonable. Il try get a clip.
