It was introduced by Thatcher in the early
1980s to supplement MPs salaries during a time when she was grinding away at public sector salary increases.

So it is the Left wings preverbial bogeyman Maggie, who is to blame for all the current MP's who could not keep their sticky mits out the till. Nothing to do with their own lack of morals?
'Thatcher made me do it' came the cry from our elected representatives.

Brings to mind the rather wonderful quote from HIGNFY.

This pool is full of piss! Instead of, We've all been pissing in the pool.

I agree H. It was ok for the Brits to go to France in 1944 in vast numbers but somehow in 2009 they are not so welcome. It seems that photo opportunities with Mr Obama are what matters to the French today. The Queen might clutter up the photos so to speak. It is a slight to the British that they are airbrushed out of history and treated like an also-ran, when France today is littered with cemeteries of the British dead. Shameful and ungrateful.

Great story in the paper last week about someone who took his Dad and Father-in-Law to the 60th Anniversary, they both landed on Gold beach on D Day. They were stopped by the gendarmes and asked for their tickets and his Dad said "I didn't need a bloody ticket 60 years ago and I don't need one now". They let them straight through and gave them a police escort.

WONDERFUL Clapping
EDWARDIAN LIL
Don’t worry, Flint’s gone but instead Gordon has confirmed in the same press conference that we’ve been lumped with Glenys Kinnock being put into the House of Lords, and into the government. How many unelected people into government does that make that today, along with Alan Sugar?

There goes Browngabe’s claim to restore the democratic deficit – forcing people onto us that have NEVER faced any election.Half of the chuffing cabinet will be from the Lords at this rate. I thought Labour wanted to scrap the HoL.

This is Democratic Renewal, people.

Where do you get this from Lil? First I've heard of it!

As I recall Beveridge was thought to be an expert on social services and unemployment, and was taken on board by David Lloyd George, rather like Brown employing Sir Alan Sugar.
So partly correct.
However he did his paper on the main problems during the war and the NHS was put in place by the Labour government.

Precisely 0 councils out of 34 so far. The Tories have 27.

This is how Gordon knows that ‘people’ want him to stay and ‘get on with the job’.

What effing people? Utterly delusional.

If your expecting anything to change when the Tories get back in you're in for big disappointment. I remember Labour in Opposition saying all the right things.
There is very little difference between todays Labour party and the Tories. All this expenses scandal has put me right off all politicians.

Gordon Brown must be one of the unluckiest leaders in British Politics. As well as not being up to the job of leader, his tenure as PM has been hit by two of the biggest bombshells in Political history, the credit crunch and the expenses scandal.

That's just the start of it.
Wait until the press starting printing details of all the extra-curricular jobs these MP's have.
