I have not visited a cinema for a very long time.
The last time I went the sound was far too loud and very distort as a result.

What is going to the cinema like these days?
I am told that people talk and make noise now (which they didn't used to do)
It used to be 6d   (sixpence), there used to be 15/20 minute serials which ran and ran and ran.
The programme would often change midweek.
They played the National Anthem at the end, and sold ice creams from a tray during the interval.

Is cinema-going a nice experience these days?

Hi Brisket & Monkey Oh Brisket, you brought back so many memories with your description there Do you (or anyone else) remember Saturday morning *pics* aimed at children.? I loved it Last time I went to the *pictures* was  a couple of years ago. I went with my granddaughter, to see Wallace and Gromit and the WereRabbit.  I had been for decades before that, and nearly passed out when they told me how much the tickets were

Hello Baz.    I do indeed remember Saturday morning pictures. Used to be very very popular.
I am pleased you said "pictures" because that is what we always said. We did not say 'cinema'.
We had 3 picture places within walking distance.
The Regal (now a cheap supermarket, after housing bingo for a while.)
The Princess - known affectionately as 'Robbies' after the owner - (now grass.)
The Electra - where now stands a residential home.

There was some noise, as people reacted to exciting moments in the film.
But the rest of the time it was respectfully quiet.

They sure were... we had 1 picture house within walking distance and 2 within a short bus ride.... an Odeon, a Remberant, and can't remember the other one. I think the Odeon is still there (I've not been *home* in many , many years.  The queues outside them all were huge on a Saturday morning..... with lots of hissing at the bad guys, and cheering at the good guysIf my memory serves me, it was 3d to get in,  then on the way home we used to pile into the local chip shop and ask for a free bag of scraps

Its dead expensive unless you can find an indepedant cinema....last time we went it cost ÂĢ34 for four of us at our local Cineworld...but a few days later 3 of us went to the small independant cinema at Westgate on Sea near my in-laws and it cost ÂĢ10 for three of us and the screen we were inwas really cute...33 seats in all...everything was cheaper as well as drinks and sweets.

When I was wee, I loved going to the pictures on a Saturday afternoon. It was lovingly nicknamed "the fleapit". Happy memories of Coke in glass bottles and the usherette selling choc ices and ice lollies during the interval (they showed two films in those days).
I haven't been to the cinema for a long time. The tickets and food are over-priced, there are always people chatting or popping in and out to the toilet or kiosk, and the seats are not very comfortable.

I love going to the pictures, I've been about 6 times this year, I always go on my own, NO I'm not weird!, if I want to see a film, then that's what I'll do, I pay my money, sit down and watch it, experience it and make my owm judgements on the film. I last went this Monday afternoon to see The Social Network, it was brill! Oh and it's cheaper to go on your, no buying over priced crap junk food!.

The thing that really, really annoys me in the cinema: people who can't leave their phones alone......it's so distracting when you see the bright light of a mobile phone screen in the corner of your vision in a dark cinema.

I don't go very often now, people are too selfish and disrespectful to others, sadly. It is expensive, so whenever I do go, I make sure it's Orange Wednesday - 2 for 1 tickets.

I'd rather watch films at home. When I was a kid I went to the cinema with a group of other kids. It was the Sunday matinee 'outing' some people are describing here. The main billing went to a western of some description which I can't remember. Accidentally (well I hope it was a bloody accident) the support film was a horror film called Blackula (about a black Dracula) and had several scenes in a morgue with corpses appearing from under sheets as vampires which scared the living hell out of me and a cinema full of other kids all of whom went running for the exit before it was over!

I hate the cinema.
I am a misery - I would much rather be at home watching a film.
For a start I find it hard to keep still and have the attention span of a gnat.
At least at home I can skip through the boring bit, or even just do something else if I am bored.

I hate the way people come in at the last minute - I feel like shouting "WTF - you knew what time it started! Why do you wait till the last minute to come in???"
