I stayed in Long Island, which is about 2 hours away from Manhatten. Was quite picturesque and not like the hustle and bustle of the city.

Look for money off coupons in restaurants and stuff. I picked up loads in a place called Dallas BBQ. It's just off Times Square and does the biggest meals for under $10. WWE cafe is just round the corner too if any of you like the wrestling

we were thinking of april time rawky...that or august.but guess it'd be hotter then than june!

Believe it or not I stayed in a youth hostel. It was just off Broadway and was fantastic. $30 a night. We had a private room with our own bathroom. It was basic but clean. All you do is sleep there so we wanted it as cheap as possible. Lots of money to spend on other things then

If you're looking for cheaper accommodation then look at B&Bs and 'Inns'.. added bonus is you're staying with native New Yorkers that can clue you in on whats on, where to go etc..

the empty suitcase thing is on the spongettes list...i can see my ideas of going to the statue of liberty etc going completely down the drain..as i'm hauled round shops instead!!!

No sorry. I know it was part of the Banana Bungalow group though. There are loads of nice hostels in NY. Try hostelworld.com or look into renting an apartment. They work out cheaper than hotels too and you get your own kitchen and stuff.

Is it a family of 4 Spongey? A one bedroom apartment in Manhattan will cost around $30pppn so that's $120. Cheaper than most hotels and you have total privacy

Don't go on any fancy river trips.. just take the Staten Island ferry from Battery Park. You get views of lower Manhatten, Statue of Liberty and the Harbour.

Grand Central... NY Public Library... Times Square... Central Park... freeeee.

Guggenheim does a 'pay what you wish' on Friday evenings. In the spring/summer there are often free performances at Central Park. The Bronx Zoo is free one day a week. If you want to see some of NY with a native check out 'Big Apple Greeters'.. it's walking tours of neighbourhoods for freeeee.

Empty suitcase, credit card, good walking shoes and you're sorted. Don't take cabs...no need with the undergroud and buses. I loved walking round. So much to take in and you don't realise how far you've walked.

Mr Q went a few years ago with his work, his hotel was a stones throw from Times Square and a bit pricey so I won't recommend that.

Wherever you go...am sure you'll have a fab time

last time we stayed at the New York Sky Line hotel, basic, but ok, we were hardly in the room, this time it's just me & my daughter going, I promised her a trip when she turned 18,
We are not going to shop heavy, and will probably skip the outlets of Woodbury Common,

How much you spend depends if you go clothes shoppping there, we usually do,

i think shopping will feature somehow...with 2 teenage daughters!!!!

Not booked it yet, not sure if I'll do a city break, or book hotel and flights separatly,

Waiting until my daughter get her college
timetable before we pick dates, I quite fancy going first week of December.

Don't take too much valium before boarding your flight at Heathrow and get declared unfit to travel.

It's a real pain trying to claim the cost back through the insurance

Have fun though (I still intend to get there one day )

Oh I'm so jealous! Would love to go back! Can't offer advice as it's been many years since I was there - pre 9/11 as I chose to go up the Empire State Building instead of the twin towers for the touristy thing.
