The way I see it, my mother could if she wanted, downsize her house and give me and my siblings £100,000 each. I understand that if my mum then lives for a certain period after then the tax liability is either reduced or wiped out (would need someone in the know about that), but is that not what DC's mum has done?

I believe that is correct, and lots of people do it.

That's exactly what she's done .....and if I had the sort of dosh she / they have I'd be silly not to do the same .....cos why should my kids pay tax on money I've already paid tax on
