Ghurka test cases rejected

Five out of five test cases of Ghurkas applying to live in Britain have been rejected by the Government. Skip related content
They include two Falklands veterans and a Gulf war veteran.

A spokesman for the campaign said: "We trusted the Prime Minister to take charge of the situation. This is an outrage and a disgrace."

The revelations come just a day after Gordon Brown promised to review residency rights for Gurkhas following a meeting with campaigner Joanna Lumley and come up with a new policy by the end of the month.

Ms Lumley said the meeting was "extremely positive" but she had no detail of what Mr Brown's proposals may be. She added: "I trust him. I rely on him. I know he has taken this matter into his own hands."

"I think this is now in his hands. It has been in many people's hands. It has been bandied around from the Ministry of Defence to the Home Office and all kinds of different people have been dealing with it."

She added: "Now, I feel we have got the head man, the man at the top, the leader of our entire nation and I feel absolutely confident he is going to do the right thing for the Gurkhas."

Downing Street said it had been a "positive" meeting. "It was a friendly meeting, it was a constructive meeting," the Prime Minister's spokesman said.

He added: "The Prime Minister listened to Miss Lumley's concerns and proposals and made clear his admiration and gratitude for the Gurkhas' contribution over the years."

The meeting took place after Ms Lumley told the Home Affairs Select Committee she had written to the Prime Minister on three occasions to request a meeting, without success.

Mr Brown is bidding to ease anger over the issue among the public and Labour backbenchers.

Last week, the Government suffered a humiliating Commons defeat over its proposals for extending residency rights for Gurkhas.

Dozens of Labour MPs abstained, while 27 rebels sided with opposition parties in calling for a more generous deal.
