always veering off topic... we've done well...  we've covered models of mobile phones, councils wasting public money, hobbies, hubby, bikes, rambling...got the dogs mentioned, ....    and the star of off topic subjects.... DOGS IN COSTUMES!

whooop!

(should anyone want to post anything at all about geocaching.. please do... I am still interested!)

Meant to say does hubby leave something when he finds a cache Ditty
oh yes...  he bought some bits n bobs at tesco's...  mini highlighter pens.. led keyrings & other such toot!   He's banging on about getting some engraved travel bugs done

Currently though... he is doing reccies for the perfect place to put a cache near to us (one we would keep an eye on)...

I will make sure he has the groundspeak url...  I know he looks at the geocaching.com one & the GAGC one.

oh he's really into it then..

My neighbour has a stack of plastic boxes in his house all waiting to be placed..  very serious he takes it too..

The Groundspeak link takes you to the geocaching.com link anyway..  I hadn't looked at it for a few years.. it a mahoosive thing now..

I checked the hide and seek link and can see a few of my mates caches  there.. he mainly does south of England but also ventures north a good few times a year too

Not that I have ever done any of them. .tis pretty hard to do them when you have the agoraphobia thingy

I don't have a GPS, though
not even on your mobile (awaits Zaph to comment on the limitations of mobile GPS)...  or pedestrian mode on a satnav?

I love the idea of it...  I am aware that the yellow gadget in hubbies toot drawer is the GPS thingy...  However... its only just occurred to me that I haven't got a clue about map grid references, long & Latitude jobbies and stuff!

I used to follow the other teams when we did orienteering at school fgs!

... oh, you'd have appreciated hubbies armchair geocaching then... sitting on the sofa last night...  looking for clues for caches that looked like they would be on main roads or bridges.. and then google street mapping to see if he could find them!

I did tut and tell him he seemed to be missing the point!

Flippineck - expensive hobby! I'd want to find more than a tupperware box with a keyring in it, if I'd coughed up for one of those.
you can get them for about ÂĢ80.   Thing is, if you already do walking as a hobby...  and go off the beaten track then you are likely, (& wise apparently) to already have one.

Also... I don't think the treasure itself is the main motivation.. its more the challenge and appreciating the countryside etc!

apparently

Cos whilst hubby says all this to me... and I am nodding in agreement...  I suddenly imagine the horror of treking 8 miles... searching in lots of creepy crawlie riddled nooks & crannies, only to find an EMPTY cache box...

I would cry!

also... some caches are as small as a camera film tub thingy.... and they just have a bit of paper in them for you to log that you found it....

...no treasure

I do love a good walk in the wilds, but I usually just do it with hiking boots, a map of my chosen route and a kagoul!
I can only imagine my reaction if I'd gone up crag and down gully for some 'treasure' and found a film canister with a bit of paper in..

on the whole walking, & maps, & navigation thing....

I don't think I would do this without hubby....   I once got lost in our local 'Country Park' for 8 hours!  The kids were quite small... and it was before I had a mobile!

It has bloody different coloured arrows and footpaths & named walks fgs.... but I did get lost.... and when it started to get dark I panicked!

I ended up finding my way to a main road and then walked to the tesco's up the road and rang my dad to come and pick us up and take us back to the car park so I could get my car!
