This appears to be what's left for today's choices - I've put the clue number against the ones surmised for today so far

Slightly, but not very off topic...when I was looking at the list of cities yesterday I wondered why a place I know fairly well wasn't on it. Rochester, Kent is quite big and has a massive cathedral in the middle of it. According to wiki

Rochester obtained city status in 1211, but this was lost due to an administrative error when Rochester was absorbed by the Medway unitary authority.

That's a bit unfair!

This is the blog Richard uses to post the clues. He hid the answer somewhere in the recent post. (Hidden in the post)

As for Stirling, a ling is a type of fish (it's a cod I believe). And you stir porridge.

Oh, am I too late to even have a stab at one? Shame.

I would be too, if I wasn't on sick leave.

You can always go through them and see if you have any alternative views/suggestions.

Get it now, but it's not to do with stirring porridge, but that 'doing porridge' is serving a sentence in jail - In Stir.

How did that happen?

the person who said i wasn't playing in the "spirit"  is someone called ollie (ollie the smurf, a young man i think) he must also be connected to this forum as he posted a link on twitter to this thread.

He was probably googling answers aswell and somehow found the thread.  Which means he was getting help too from google.

That's what I thought too Ells.

Anyway, it's nice to see an influx of new members.  Hopefully they might wander out of this thread and in to others.

Thank you to iMcGenius for your explanation of Bath as the answer to 40.  I have just been reading about CS Lewis and I stated before he was born in Belfast where he lived until he went to war at aged 18.  He travelled to Northern Ireland a great deal but lived and worked mostly in England and is buried there, so I am inclined to put him near the bottom of the pile for 33.

Like the idea of Carlisle and still like Oxford as it was my first thought.

I would be more confident about 'Carlisle' as an answer if the clue had referred to more than one Lewis (i.e. Lewis'). The clues have all been very carefully worded and I am now not sure if this could be intended to mean a conjunction of two different variations of things called/named Lewis. Using this interpretation would mean the clue is particularly vague; it's a bit of a leap to just pick Carl out of the thousands of famous people with the name Lewis (Jerry Lee, Leona, Daniel-Day, C.S., etc).

My first thought was also Oxford, as the setting for the detective show 'Lewis' (which I have actually never watched, but I had previously seen Morse).

So then I was trying to think of something related to the show being a Morse spin-off, as in 'remorse' (re-Morse). But I cannot see a city whose name could be interpreted as remorse (so I think that's a dead-end).

iMcGenius

lewis = oxford is very simple,  looking at one worded clues we have:

continued - preston  (pressed on)

leaver - exeter  (exit er)

cleats - newcastle  (rearrange cleats + new [word])

dagenham? - hereford (ford is here)

ern is - inverness (not sure about that one!)

so i think there must be more to lewis  (loo/lou is..?)

machel

If 'Lewis' is Carlisle, then it will be one of his better clues from the whole quiz. Remember that the title of the quiz is wordplay, in which case Oxford is a non-starter for me.

I like the thinking behind Carlisle being Lewis, and I'd put a few quid on it being right!
Wish I'd found this forum sooner - I had 29 of the first 30, and have got ten today I think thanks to coming on here.
Mind you, I sent my entries to an incorrect email address
