Can someone explain Sterling to me?
Also don't think Hamilton is a city.
answers to yesterday clues (and should have logged on here 1 more time!)
newry
truro
peterborough
edinburgh
armagh
hereford
portsmouth
bristol
leicester or wells
derby
Does that mean that both Leicester and Wells are no longer contenders?

You would appear to be right about Hamilton not having City status. Posted first - checked for cities after.
These are much easier today:
31. St Asaph (rearrangement of pasta within sh)
32. Gloucester (glossed her)
33.
34. Stirling
35. Birmingham (anagram)
36. St. Albans
37. Coventry (coven & try)
38. Inverness (as in 'ern' is in verness)
39.
40.
Stuck on those three
I think 33 is Hamilton
F1 driver.
Hamilton's not a city.
Number 40 is BATH. He'd hidden the name of the city in the post with the clues. "HIDDEN IN THE POST". Only need 33 now and I'm done!

This appears to be what's left for today's choices - I've put the clue number against the ones surmised for today so far
Well, that seems to be it done and dusted today in double quick time - though it hasn't quite gelled with me why (34) is Stirling an (40) is Bath.
Slightly, but not very off topic...when I was looking at the list of cities yesterday I wondered why a place I know fairly well wasn't on it. Rochester, Kent is quite big and has a massive cathedral in the middle of it. According to wiki
Rochester obtained city status in 1211, but this was lost due to an administrative error when Rochester was absorbed by the Medway unitary authority.
That's a bit unfair!
I'm not convinced about Oxford for "Lewis". Seems too easy.
I'm thinking of people named Lewis. Carroll, Hamilton. Damien Lewis. Jerry Lee Lewis...

Oh, am I too late to even have a stab at one? Shame.

This is the blog Richard uses to post the clues. He hid the answer somewhere in the recent post. (Hidden in the post)
As for Stirling, a ling is a type of fish (it's a cod I believe). And you stir porridge.

I would be too, if I wasn't on sick leave.
You can always go through them and see if you have any alternative views/suggestions.
Might be more fun for us non tweeters to try and guess what the clues might be for the few remaining cities
edit: Oh Fluffs! Might do later

Get it now, but it's not to do with stirring porridge, but that 'doing porridge' is serving a sentence in jail - In Stir.

Sounds like a meal my husband served up recently.
Lewis
I have Oxford for clue 33. I know it is easy but most of them seem to be today. Can you tell me how you came by Bath for 40 please.

Just found out CS Lewis, the author, was born in Belfast which has not been used yet as a city. Now to decide whether clue 33 is Oxford or Belfast! Help!
Hi all, thought I'd join in the fun, albeit it late. lol
There's an Aussie actor named Lincoln Lewis. Too far out?

Apparently it's something to do with his blog post with today's clues, but as I'm not on twitter I can't verify that.

The clue for 40 is: Hidden in the Post.
This refers to the text in the blog post, in which Richard uses the term,
"lets get on with the job at hand"
The city of Bath is contained within the text.
Daniel Day LEWIS is going to play Abraham LINCOLN in anew film
Lewis is the name of an island off the coast of Scotland - Isle of Lewis.
Another famous Lewis is Carl Lewis, the american athlete.
Carl + Isle = Carlisle?
this quiz is from richard osman (i follow him on twitter) and the prize is the pointless book (due out on the 11th) so not a prize of great wealth, however i have now been outed on twitter as not playing "in the spirit" (gaga is now trending on twitter!!!!!) i don't think i am being unfair as if i was at work etc i would be asking colleagues, although someone is now (or has done) putting on wrong answers, if that is you, please don't, (i would rather you refrain from answering) as that would not be "in the spirit"
How did that happen?
the person who said i wasn't playing in the "spirit" is someone called ollie (ollie the smurf, a young man i think) he must also be connected to this forum as he posted a link on twitter to this thread.
He was probably googling answers aswell and somehow found the thread. Which means he was getting help too from google.
That's what I thought too Ells.
Anyway, it's nice to see an influx of new members. Hopefully they might wander out of this thread and in to others.

I agree with this - great thinking
Another word for Disallows is 'bans'
Another word for Final is 'last' and if you 'mix up' the word 'last' you get StAl
So, putting bans AFTER StAl gets you St. Albans.

Yeah, it's a little more exiting than the Oxford answer.
Thank you to iMcGenius for your explanation of Bath as the answer to 40. I have just been reading about CS Lewis and I stated before he was born in Belfast where he lived until he went to war at aged 18. He travelled to Northern Ireland a great deal but lived and worked mostly in England and is buried there, so I am inclined to put him near the bottom of the pile for 33.
Like the idea of Carlisle and still like Oxford as it was my first thought.

I would be more confident about 'Carlisle' as an answer if the clue had referred to more than one Lewis (i.e. Lewis'). The clues have all been very carefully worded and I am now not sure if this could be intended to mean a conjunction of two different variations of things called/named Lewis. Using this interpretation would mean the clue is particularly vague; it's a bit of a leap to just pick Carl out of the thousands of famous people with the name Lewis (Jerry Lee, Leona, Daniel-Day, C.S., etc).
My first thought was also Oxford, as the setting for the detective show 'Lewis' (which I have actually never watched, but I had previously seen Morse).
So then I was trying to think of something related to the show being a Morse spin-off, as in 'remorse' (re-Morse). But I cannot see a city whose name could be interpreted as remorse (so I think that's a dead-end).
lewis = oxford is very simple, looking at one worded clues we have:
continued - preston (pressed on)
leaver - exeter (exit er)
cleats - newcastle (rearrange cleats + new [word])
dagenham? - hereford (ford is here)
ern is - inverness (not sure about that one!)
so i think there must be more to lewis (loo/lou is..?)
If 'Lewis' is Carlisle, then it will be one of his better clues from the whole quiz. Remember that the title of the quiz is wordplay, in which case Oxford is a non-starter for me.
I like the thinking behind Carlisle being Lewis, and I'd put a few quid on it being right!
Wish I'd found this forum sooner - I had 29 of the first 30, and have got ten today I think thanks to coming on here.
Mind you, I sent my entries to an incorrect email address
