Didn't he leave a hacker message on the computers about US foreign policy and terrorism, and his intention to do it again?

And there you have your answer! he leaves his name to say he will do it again!! My Nephew has Aspergus and is 16, he stayed last night and was totally obsessed with a mechanical voice on my lap top telling him "YOU HAVE SCORED A BULLSEYE"! over and over again. He has no filters and can be a little buggar at the best of times but is very innocent in lots of other ways...what that poor Mother must be going through must be terrible...

why is mental illness not a real illness??
It is actually very similar as in both cases it can be said that the perpetrator is not responsible for their crime - ok the crimes are very different - but the principle remains the same!!
Of course it is, I would never suggest otherwise. But people with Apsergers are not mentally ill...so it's a bit like comparing Arthritis to Diabetes...both genuine conditions but have bugger all to do with each other.
The "principle" does not remain the same...the purpose of prison is not just to punish, it is also to protect society, to rehabilitate and to set an example. I would argue that society does need protecting from violent people (mentally ill or not)...society does NOT need protecting from Gary McKinnon.
Gary McKinnon would not serve as an "example" to other neurodiverse folk as the very nature of the condition(s) means they wouldn't process the information in the same way.
What does McKinnon need rehabilitating against? Being a computer whizz? Having an interest in UFO's? Are you kidding me?
If you are going down the path of punishment then I would (and I admit I know quite little about the case) think that maybe just maybe, he has been punished enough?
Equal Opportunities is NOT and had never been about "treating everyone the same" that is a disgusting myth perpetuated by the ignorant. Equal ops is about equal chances...look up the word "differentiation" and see how it would work in this case.
Mollie, my pleasure

Do we all agree that all Aspies are different?
Because the 2 I live with definitely know right from wrong and are more than capable of lying when caught doing something wrong.
Also step-son is capable of being malicious (he did something really sick and tried to blame my kids).
So............let him face trial - I don't care where it happens but you can't let him off or make things easier becuase he has AS.
My posts ALWAYS end up at the bottom of the page! Grrrr!
thats because you had trouble on C4 with your son
heva!!!!!!!!!!!!
she told us you was a drug addict when your son got pulled for buying LEMSIP!
we all knew it was for you and your addiction
remember that?
awwww!
that was sooooo funny

I have never denied it is me - most ppl on here know anyway it is no secret!!
Your problem with this case is you are too close to see it objectively - because you have experienced aspergers you are only seeing it from your own case you are unable to see that this man's sitution is most probably very different to that of your childs!!

This is all from memory but I understood he left his hacker name ... like a graffiti tag ... rather than "Gary McKinnon, UK".

when my step son gets excited about summat like his dinner is nearly ready etc.. we have to put up with him doing a 'beep' noise-usually accompanied by the same dance routine and always in front of the telly

Aye he did, by hurting people I was making the point about violence as our dear Hevva kept bringing violent mentally ill people into the equation.

Last I heard, he's serving a sentence under British justice and could be extradited to the US when his sentence has finished. Seems fair enough to me. Not sure I agree with an extradition to the Yemen though.

Ahhhhh, maybe they should just hand him over straight away, save us the cost of keeping him and the cost of the numerous appeals etc.....let the Yanks deal with him!

You may not have used understand but a lack of understanding is what that sentence amounts to!!!

look I have better things to do than repeat myself over and over - to me that sentence reads that you are saying ppl with such conditions do not understand actions and consequences - if you meant otherwose then fine we will just have to agree to disagree wont we!!!

It's fair enough point to make to be fair - but I just have some feeling that his actions weren't as innocent as some say!! I could be completely wrong here but it is just a feeling I get whenever I see him on TV!!!
