One last thing... it's absolutely NOT because you disagree, it's because you don't understand autism, and understandably so... but if you have a child/sibling/or someone close with this disorder, you have to understand everything about it,and for you it would have been good to listen to the people who do live with it...

We actually do know what we are talking about... anyway I am off this thread now.

It is actually very similar as in both cases it can be said that the perpetrator is not responsible for their crime - ok the crimes are very different - but the principle remains the same!!

Of course it is, I would never suggest otherwise. But people with Apsergers are not mentally ill...so it's a bit like comparing Arthritis to Diabetes...both genuine conditions but have bugger all to do with each other.

The "principle" does not remain the same...the purpose of prison is not just to punish, it is also to protect society, to rehabilitate and to set an example. I would argue that society does need protecting from violent people (mentally ill or not)...society does NOT need protecting from Gary McKinnon.

Gary McKinnon would not serve as an "example" to other neurodiverse folk as the very nature of the condition(s) means they wouldn't process the information in the same way.

What does McKinnon need rehabilitating against? Being a computer whizz? Having an interest in UFO's? Are you kidding me?

If you are going down the path of punishment then I would (and I admit I know quite little about the case) think that maybe just maybe, he has been punished enough?

Equal Opportunities is NOT and had never been about "treating everyone the same" that is a disgusting myth perpetuated by the ignorant. Equal ops is about equal chances...look up the word "differentiation" and see how it would work in this case.

i agree, when i'm out i worry about my son's behaviour...not cos of HIM but cos of the ignorant people i come across, staring, saying nasty comments etc. if he hears them, which he does, it makes him ten times worse too.

I've lived with AS for 10 years Step-son (17) and his Dad (my partner).
Do we all agree that all Aspies are different?

Because the 2 I live with definitely know right from wrong and are more than capable of lying when caught doing something wrong.
Also step-son is capable of being malicious (he did something really sick and tried to blame my kids).
So............let him face trial - I don't care where it happens but you can't let him off or make things easier becuase he has AS.

Any your gawjuss boy too, Darth!

It's not the ASD'ers and Aspies that need rehab....it's bloody judgemental barstewards that need re-educating!!!

I learnt a long time ago that a sizeable portion of the "human race" are not even worth a hand job, they look and assume....they should ask valid questions and learn something instead!

Massively exhausting, I am on my own with the boys and luckily I get respite or I wouldn't cope.. my aspie boy is less work on one level, he can care to some degree on his own, but my 18 yr old is very hard going.. love them to pieces and would defend them to the ends of the earth!!

just an added note, my aspie boy wasn't offically diagnosed till he was 18, now 23.. 18 yr old was 3 before he displayed any signs..

Ex is useless lol...

I watch BB for light relief lol!!

Tanya, my understanding of it is that McKinnon has done nothing malicious...it's embarrassing for the US government more than anything, he didn't go out with the intention of hurting anyone.

Mollie, thank you, that's very kind Smiler

TBH I haven't read much of the "case" just wanted to point out that some Aspies can be malicious and can know right from wrong. And can also "unlearn" behaviours, I'm not saying all aspies can though - they might be able to I just don't know. Hug

my son certainly is capable of lying. cant say it malicious though. he just knows i'll get angry so lies....thats pretty much same with all kids.
sometimes though he will lie to make me angry, when he has done nothing wrong....probably to make me display an emotion/expression he understands. being in a normal mood/expression seems to confuse him. i think thats the main reason he pushes me Disappointed
