I think the poly in poly tunnel is a shortening of the material used to make said tunnel.
I was going for poly as in polyphonic in music, playing multiple notes.

When she used to be on I recall her wearing gloves all the time. I may be wrong but when she was younger and getting pregnant she wanted to keep her hands away from the soil.
