I just threw them on the top EC ....thinking I was getting rid of them

Both ....if my crop was anything to go by
Where I live it's mostly grass, but there are a couple of patches of bare ground that could do with some colour. They get sun until 12, then the sun passes behind houses,
They'll love that! Mine get the shade first, then the sun in the afternoon.

they seem slightly more hardy than the lovely creamy white ones-Icelandic poppies
