Years ago we used to go to The Old Red House in Carlton Miniot. Supes would probably recommend The Crab n Lobster near Topcliffe. I have eaten in the same HQ establishment for the last four years, we like it very much, Supes doesn't. It's a minefield suggesting stuff like this, but Supes gets about more than me, and I'm sure will be along later.

The thing is Joe, we're looking for somewhere that will serve a good roast as the party consists of our daughters, their children and the very finicky partners. 

I would suggest somewhere near Thirsk

The place we go today had four roast meats, exceptional yorkshires, three types of potatoes, mashed turnip and carrots, peas, cabbage, and sprouts.
For people who like that sort of thing, stuffing, parsnips, and also cauliflower in some sort of cheese muck, and two versions of gravy.

GJ is correct, I don't rate where he goes unfortunately as I've had nothing but bad experiences there on work lunches. However I've never been for Sunday lunch, perhaps, unlike weekdays, they actually buy fresh meat and veg and cook it ?

Its not until later in the year, but we're taking eldest grandchild to Disney On Ice, so Thirsk is a good half way point that all children can meet for lunch, and we can deliver him back to his parents.

Definitely, the top of Sutton Bank ( and the bottom) is beautiful.

It is indeed a fabulous part of the country! Supes knows every nook and cranny.
Meanwhile, we are off to Whitby on an intelligence gathering trip tomorrow. I regularly take part in "Best Fish and Chips" debates on a couple of other Forums.
(We will also hit the charity shops damn hard)
