i meant by ' keeping our beaks out' that the  arabs need no  no intervention from the west, what america  thinks and what europe thinks  matters not a jot, they need  and are dying  for self determination, i hope they succeed.

and yes the tunisian  uprising was ignited by a  protester setting fire to himself rather than continue to live  under a dictatorship, and the protest was continued on facebook and  twitter and brought about the eventual demise  of ben ali ,

it  must be the first  technology driven revolution we have  witnessed, but its not the west shoving its beak in, its the disenfranchised using a tool that  has been made available to them .

in the words of some from the telly 'power to the people'

Yes of course Gaddafi needs to go, but this needs to be done by his own people.  It is not the place for us or any other country to interfere in the affairs of another state.  Our invasion of Iraq  brought about the death of countless thousands of innocent civilians.  I hope that our current government does not have the same disregard for international law.

you are being  questioned by growly because it  seemed, from your posts, that you think the solution to the problem of gadaffi is to get rid of him( which i think we all agree with) by some interference from  the west, and its that interference that has caused  many of the problems in the past that we now have to deal with.

We have no right to interfere....indeed the UN charter does state that a foreign force may only enter a country if that country actually asks for assistance....as Kuwait did during the first Iraq war....We had no business hanging on to the USA's coat tails in their Afghan and Iraqi adventures.
With a bit of luck Gaddafi will end up swinging from a lamp post...but the aftermath may be as bad as the present mayhem.

I disagree. If we can get in there and get rid of Gadaffi or any of his unsaviour family, lets do it. He has too many cronies to call on. His own people will never do it because the people will string them up for being friendly with the gadaffi government. Get rid of this bastard now. We have the chanche. Do it.

I'm not talking about our army going in there, but I am talking about keeping Facebook, hotmail and twitter alive so that people can talk to us and convey the carnage that is happening in the country.
Do we really need them to know what must be going on though?

Don't think of it as crossing borders - think of it as all being fellow citizens of the same world.
I don't think that anyone here does not feel sympathy for the Libyan people, unfortunately that is all we can give them

We have to, if we are to obey international law Sprout. The UN can remonstrate, but that is all it can do under it's own charter. Harsh as it may seem, the Libyan people have to sort this out by themselves and hopefully the dice will fall their way

The UN aren't worth zilch anyway, and sadly.....it does seem as though we have to leave this one for the moment

Col, I know where you're coming from, but once bitten, twice shy and all that. It's really really hard I I know, but we have to keep clear heads on this one I think. It could grow to gawd knows what

You know I live you to bits, but I just don't agree this time. Gadaffi (Gaddafi) has to be got rid off and I hope that the Army have changed their mind and are backing up the ordinary people. It's make or brak for the north of Africa and I think it may hopefully filter down to all the other African Countries.

That's power for you - coupled with a big blob of intimidation!
The man is clearly mad to put it bluntly.
Utterly delusional, of unsound mind, unbalanced, unhinged, crazy, crackers.
If it was an ordinary citizen like me, I would be sectioned and in a psychiatric ward.
But he is still there. Blatantly lying. He now says there has been no violence.
It saddens me to think of people being killed simply because this man is bonkers.

It really is shocking isn't it? I'm thankful I live where I do ................it's all down to chance really.
I agree Soozy...

I don't agree.....we haven't the power to enforce anything, since our planes and warships have been either mothballed or done away with.
We also have no right under the UN charter to interfere in another state's internal affairs...it is not our job to effect a regime change, desirable though that is.
Tony Blair was wrong to go into Iraq.....it would be equally wrong for Cameron to go into Libya
