Some parents don't care and many children put themselves out school.Having a breakfast gives them the energy they will need to concentrate on their lessons,it's the same with 'free' school meals ,it just might be the only meal they get.
They were free at Strathallan.
Always had "Breakfast clubs" up here in Scotland for years.
On the news it was being reported as FREE for various reasons.
Free to all too - and I pick up the bill.
Why?

To feed children who don't have the choice of what to buy from the benefits and would benefit from a good start to the day.
My kids love breakfast club. It's not free but it's so cheap that they can have a full big breakfast (cereal, pancakes, juice and fruit r even scrambled or beans on toast) for about 75p if even that. They always have change from ÂĢ1. They go to it on mornings that their daddy has to work earlier but they always ask if they can every day.
Report sed it was being 'introduced' for 3 months.
I don't mean to upset anyone
I just wonder why i pay to feed others (its open to all regardless of earnings)
I expect the ronseal boys will bring back the "poorhouse" soon.

It's Blackpool Council I think ? And it seems to be operating on the same principle as the NHS was founded on .. open to all regardless of earnings, funded by all that are in a position to contribute .
I'm more concerned that we all had to pay to keep these folk afloat !
Eight bankers charged over allegations of corruption, money-laundering & fraudulent trading at #HBOS's Impaired Assets team in Reading, UK
Seems to have taken them awhile to deal with it!

and thats not all .... did you hear about The Brush Bus ? ..... Apparently teachers now have to teach the kids to brush thier teeth .... We never did that at school and is it really a job for the teacher to do ? .... Shouldn't parents be doing that at home?

Medical care where its need - fair enough.
But free meals where (sometimes) they are not needed seems extravagant during huge spending cuts.
Dunno Saint, I think it's an investment .. you trained as a teacher , so you'll know that a hungry, lethargic kid can be a challenge to teach , as can a kid who's wolfed down some sugar-laden chocolate cereal or other and is e-numbered up and sugar rushed It's a form of health promotion/improvement as well as setting kids up well for a day of learning. I think the London scheme is externally funded , while the cost of the Blackpool pilot is being met from Council budget - it's probably less than the Council's hospitality budget for elected members / officers! I see they're looking at the possibility of sponsorship too.
.. and it's not compulsory , families can opt out if they so wish
My niece used to go to breakfast club not because her mother my sister was feckless but because she worked shifts and sometimes she needed to go in early.
She had a great brekkie and then if they needed help looking over homework they could or just play - my niece loved it and she's 26 now so it's been going a while
as for cuts it's not just government cuts - our council, Birmingham City Council, has just announced tonight it's so skint from having to pay women back pay who won a court case against them for equal pay (men were paid more than women for doing the same or a comparable job) they are now saying anyone who gets council tax benefit will now have to contribute to the cost - they are talking about recipients paying half towards the costs - think it might be the first of many NHS/council or government benefits that will be targeted.

you'd be amazed at the number of children who now arrive at school who aren't toilet trained or need to be taught how to use a knife and fork
I appreciate the idea of a breakfast club and that it can be very helpful.
But FREE ... and to ALL
Not good - or fair on tax payers
Tbh I think Osbornes targeting you.
I wouldn't be too happy aboot it either
Saint.... Mega packs of cereal and milk etc, they ain't dining on scrambled eggs and truffle flakes.if it helps a lot of kids getting a brekky good enough for me.
I can see how its very helpful and some parents need to go to work.
But a free feed for everyone - even those that don't need it?
Well maybe they don't want to split kids into lines of "you deserve free food" ...oh you others don't/need.
If they could - they wud be fed at home.
For whatever reason - they can't.
So why not pay for the breakfast?
All
oh fooks sake just give them a bowl a bleeding rice crispies!
Get out - over there >>>>
where.....
You wimmmin always need directions

Round here the nursery schools (the one right before Primary 1) won't take kids unless they are fully toilet trained and I don't blame them. Years ago a teacher could help change a child out of soiled/wet clothes without an eyelid being bat....could you imagine it now??

I think why not.
The fat cats are getting way more than a free breakfast off you. They're getting holidays, cars, homes, duck islands etc. A few bits of food to help kids have a good start to the morning AND ensure they are on time for school (it has been admitted by head teacher at my kids school that that is a major plus about the breakfast club) isn't a bad thing to 'waste' money on.

Exactly

That's a wee bit like saying "pensioners at a lunch club get a meal?! People attending day centres get a meal they don't have to pay for ?! Out of MY pocket?! " The leader of Blackpool Council is saying they hope that more parents will take up the opportunity - which indicates that those who were having breakfast at home may well still be doing that.

aww it's such a shame though .... why have kids if you can't be bothered to teach them simple life skills etc ... it's very sad

I'm just bemused why, when families will admit they CAN afford to feed their kids, (no one is saying they NEED it cos they can't put food in their kids mouths) then get it free

When I served dinners in a school there was a little girl that said she loved coming to school on a Monday as it meant she got a dinner I always gave her extra
