Free to all too - and I pick up the bill.

Why?

To feed children who don't have the choice of what to buy from the benefits and would benefit from a good start to the day.

My kids love breakfast club.  It's not free but it's so cheap that they can have a full big breakfast (cereal, pancakes, juice and fruit r even scrambled or beans on toast) for about 75p if even that.  They always have change from ÂĢ1.  They go to it on mornings that their daddy has to work earlier but they always ask if they can every day.

I just wonder why i pay to feed others (its open to all regardless of earnings)

It's Blackpool Council I think ?  And it seems to be operating on the same principle as the NHS was founded on .. open to all regardless of earnings, funded by all that are in a position to contribute .

Medical care where its need - fair enough.

But free meals where (sometimes) they are not needed seems extravagant during huge spending cuts.

Dunno Saint, I think it's an investment .. you trained as a teacher , so you'll know that a hungry, lethargic kid can be a challenge to teach , as can a kid who's wolfed down some sugar-laden chocolate cereal or other and is e-numbered up and sugar rushed  It's a form of health promotion/improvement as well as setting kids up well for a day of learning.  I think the London scheme is externally funded , while the cost of the Blackpool pilot is being met from Council budget -  it's probably less than the Council's hospitality budget for elected members / officers!  I see they're looking at the possibility of  sponsorship too.

My niece used to go to breakfast club not because her mother my sister was feckless but because she worked shifts and sometimes she needed to go in early.

She had a great brekkie and then if they needed help looking over homework they could or just play - my niece loved it and she's 26 now so it's been going a while

as for cuts it's not just government cuts  - our council, Birmingham City Council, has just announced tonight it's so skint from having to pay women back pay who won a court case against them for equal pay (men were paid more than women for doing the same or a comparable job) they are now saying anyone who gets council tax benefit will now have to contribute to the cost - they are talking about recipients paying half towards the costs - think it might be the first of many NHS/council or government benefits that will be targeted.

you'd be amazed at the number of children who now arrive at school who aren't toilet trained or need to be taught how to use a knife and fork

Round here the nursery schools (the one right before Primary 1) won't take kids unless they are fully toilet trained and I don't blame them.  Years ago a teacher could help change a child out of soiled/wet clothes without an eyelid being bat....could you imagine it now??

I think why not.

The fat cats are getting way more than a free breakfast off you.  They're getting holidays, cars, homes, duck islands etc.  A few bits of food to help kids have a good start to the morning AND ensure they are on time for school (it has been admitted by head teacher at my kids school that that is a major plus about the breakfast club) isn't a bad thing to 'waste' money on.

That's a wee bit like saying "pensioners at a lunch club get a  meal?! People attending day centres get a meal they don't have to pay for ?! Out of MY pocket?! "  The leader of Blackpool Council is saying they hope that more parents will take up the opportunity - which indicates that those who were having breakfast at home may well still be doing that.

I'm just bemused why, when families will admit they CAN afford to feed their kids, (no one is saying they NEED it cos they can't put food in their kids mouths)  then get it free
