So i've got this dissertation due in this term , around april , may i think. Im so behind :/ And what with the other assignments I'm going to have due in this term , theres like 5 i think , I can't see it getting any better. I try to do some but everytime I do I freeze , just staring at the screen , not knowing what to do. I cant see how I'm going to get anywhere with anything. I just can't see it happening. Literally I just don't know what to do on it or how to progress :/

Don't make the mistake of thinking everyone else has been diligently doing their dissertations for weeks & weeks Chicken...    I know mine was (as always) a last minute panic...  frenzied...   a couple of all nighters...   but I got there..     as did everyone else I knew.

In fact..   I am struggling to think of anyone who did it the organised & structured way (I am sure there are people that did)...

what I am trying to say is..    the fact that you are thinking about it now...  sitting there in front of your screen now...   you are one of the diligent ones (in my book)

Everyone is going to feel like you Prawn.

I remember actually "officially" starting my dissy in January. You may need to pull a couple of all-nighters (bizarrely i quite enjoyed them ), but it will get done in the end.  Stop stressing out about it as there are plenty more others in your situation, or probably even further behind.

It will get done, these things always do.

Hi Prawn, sorry to hear you're struggling but it sounds like you're making it harder for yourself than it needs to be. Most people do that, particularly when they feel they're working against the clock. The first thing you should do is forget how many you have to finish just worry about one and forget the others exist for now. Pick one and finish it and don't worry about how long it takes just find a way of working that suits you and the other ones will be much easier when you come to them.

I think Joe's idea is a good one, just jot a few ideas for your dissertation down on paper (it doesn't matter where you get the ideas from) or put it into a word processing program if you prefer, memorise a few of the ideas, then close the notebook or word processing program, open up a blank sheet and write.

Don't think about it, just write, even if you think it's nonsense. Don't try to structure it before you start, don't try to think of the 'best' way to begin, don't worry about how many words you have to write, all of these things are what's causing you to freeze when you try to get going. Just pluck one of the things you want to talk about out of your head and write as though you were explaining it to yourself. You can always amend it later but for a lot of people getting started is the hardest part.

You'd be amazed how easy the rest will come once you get started even if you think your first couple of paragraphs make no sense just keep writing and don't stop, switching from one topic to the next as you go along. You can worry about headers and everything else later. If you can get used to working this way you'll never freeze again and each dissertation you take on will seem easier than the last.

Best of luck to you, I know you can do it!

Just get writing ...................write down any old thing that comes to mind. Scribble out all of your ideas then put it down. It'll all be going round in your head and the next time you pick it up it will have taken some shape!

My daughter has taken the week after next off work in order to do a GNVQ that she should have been working on all year! It's due in on the 31st Jan .............................she has asked me to move in with her for a week to help her get it done!

She has a mega bonus due in april ..................think I'll demand some of that!
