I can't help thinking that a lot of John's opinions are put on for the show.  If he  started spouting the sort of sexist tripe that he has on this show when he was in the Police Force he would have never have made Chief Constable (in my opinion).  Or perhaps he become adept in keeping his opinions very much under wraps
