it wasn't totally cut off - the pressure just dropped so they didn't have the same level of water as they normally do and apparently the kitchen was unaffected.

With that in mind, they probably could have offered to boil the kettle so they could have a wash in the sink??? might not have been taken up but the offer could have been there
