Had a poke about in washing machine to see if I could find something blocking it as happened before (bra wire) but nothing.  Think machine may have had it and just waiting for repair man to work wonders or deliver death sentence.  What make was your old one?  I will avoid that model!

Avoid Hoover model HNF 7148 - I paid a shed load for mine 1 1/2 years ago and it's a pile of pants

Hi all. It can be just your luck with washing machines.I had a hotpoint that lasted just over five years, the motor went so that wasn't worth a repair.I bought another hotpoint and that lasted 12 years..My latest machine is an LG direct drive, second hand,I got it for two hundred quid.It cost new, nearly 600.My nieces fiance was doing up a kitchen for a guy and he wanted a new colour scheme etc. It's excellent a large drum holds twice the washing of the old machine.

The machine was only six months old.

I had an Ariston one for about 14 years and it was great - not very fancy but did what you wanted it to do.  When that died a death I got a Hotpoint one that again lasted 17 years but eventually died a death.  I got my Hoover one based on excellent reports and it's a pile of pants - I sometimes have to wash clothes 2 or 3 times to get stains out and the cycle seems to take an age
