I was told by this Austrian bloke who was chatting me up that in years gone by, goatherds to show their virility used to climb mountains to get the chin whiskers from goats and put them in those hats hence the tradition of the little feathery bits poking out - don't know if it's true but he had me in knots laughing at him as I couldn't take it seriously
