yet another team progress by cheating
If you're referring to the handball off the line well technically yeah I suppose you're right.

But the player was punished by being sent off and Ghana were given a penalty which they failed to convert.
Nothing else the officials can do, they saw the action, punished it and gave Ghana a chance

ref just gives the side the points
it's not 'just' it's if a team fouls to stop the other side from scoring, then a penalty ty is awarded.such fouls happen just in front of the score line.

it has the effect, of ensuring teams do not foul when the opposing side is on the verge of scoring.

like  the equivalent of virtually dragging the ball out of the net with your hands to stop a certain goal against you.

beautiful game my arse , yet another team progress by cheating.
Ghana got a penalty for the last kick of the game to win the game and one of Uruguay's best players misses next game at least..

Yes he committed a cardinal sin but I think in this situation cheating shouldn't be used as liberally, imho it was instinct to raise your hand there, he knew he had done wrong as soon as he did it, the state the poor boy was in when he was taken off shows that, he was punished and Ghana received a gift of a spot kick.

Not to mention the penalty Uruguay should have gotten earlier on in the match when the fella who took the last pen was cleaned off his feet.

The problem with football is that its a lot harder to determine what a clear goal scoring opportunity is.  During the season I will guarantee you at least one game a week will have an incident where a player denies a clear goal scoring opportunity.  Sometimes the referee gets it wrong, sometimes he doesnt see it and sometimes given incorrectly the other way.

The penalty try just isnt suitable to football and I remember when it used to be just a penalty and a booking not even a sending off.  Its not like you have a 20 stone man one foot away from the try line powering in.  This was pretty clear cut but there will be a grey area and its that grey area that is the problem which is why they leave it to a penalty and a sending off which should be good enough in most cases.  This is also no different in my eyes to hauling someone down when they go past someone.

Its strange that people are more up in arms about this than they were about the potential leg breaking tackle on Elano.  Plus Uruguay probably should have got a penalty too.  Great game for the neutral though

Really great game between Ghana and Uruguay, both teams were good and so far IMO that was the game of the tournament so far. Proud of my Ghanaian heritage and what the Black Stars did at the first African World Cup  (feeling completely different to how I felt watching a half-hearted England team). I agree with the pragmatism of River Rock/Niamh and hope she remembers her wise and realistic words next time she launches herself into a tirade about Thierry Henry and the 'cheating' French
Good Luck Uruguay

Loved the Uruguay-Ghana game last night...think its right that Uruguay went through cos overall in the WC they have been a much better team than Ghana....even though I was cheering on Ghana cos they were my last team left in the family sweepstake.

I have to say though I was well impressed with Gyan missing the penalty to win in extra time but still being the first bloke to step up for Ghana in the shoot out and scoring!

I agree Veggie. From an emotional level I want to see the Germans out cos they pissed all over England and sent us home *weeps*, but from a head level they played bloody well and deserve to be there. I abhor the penalty process with a passion, I think it's such a horrible way to decide which team go through. To me, it just isn't a fair assessment on their gameplay ability, like Ghana for instance, they played an absolute blinder and were hungry all the way through (as were Uruguay to be fair) BUT I could see the fight Ghana put up and it was easy to see how much they really wanted it. Unlike England, they can go home with their heads held high cos they gave everything they had, I just think it was lack of experience at such a high level that was their downfall.

I'm liking the Holland boys (slight nod to my relations) - plus some of them are fit as feck
