Red Bull's Mark Webber has been hit with a 10-place grid penalty at the Korean Grand Prix.

The Australian and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso were both given reprimands after the Spaniard gave Webber a lift back to the pits after the Singapore Grand Prix.

Webber retired on the last lap and was stranded at Turn Seven. Alonso stopped to allow him to climb onto his car as he drove back to the pits after finishing second.

It is Webber's third reprimand this year, triggering an automatic grid penalty.

The rules say three reprimands in one season will trigger a 10-place grid penalty if two of them were imposed for "driving infringements".

Governing body the FIA has confirmed this applies in Webber's case.

His previous two were in Bahrain for a collision with Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg and in Canada for not slowing down sufficiently for yellow caution flags.

Both stopping on the track and going on the track without permission are banned.

Webber went out on to the race track to accept a lift from Alonso, who stopped in the middle of the track, despite the marshals telling him not to.

Alonso's stationary Ferrari forced two cars behind to take avoiding action.

Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna

Lotus's Kimi Raikkonen was alongside Alonso when Webber waved for a lift. Alonso stopped and Raikkonen slowed down before realising Webber would get on the Ferrari.

With Alonso stopped in the track and Webber climbing on his sidepod, the two Mercedes drivers were next on the scene.

Nico Rosberg avoided them to the left and Lewis Hamilton ran over the kerbs on the outside as he drove around the Ferrari.

"I was doing my in-lap, came around the corner and Fernando was there, and I was really shocked," said Hamilton.

"I went to the right of him, but if Mark had been walking across where I went then I would have run him over. Fortunately, that wasn't the case.

"It's good for the fans to see and, as long as it's done in a safe manner - you don't stop on the racing line - then maybe it should be allowed for the future.

"In sport, it's cool. There have been times where I've driven past someone else who has stopped and I'd wished I'd stopped."

It's not the first time a driver has given another a lift after the chequered flag. In the 1991 British Grand Prix, Nigel Mansell gave Ayrton Senna a ride back to the pits on his Williams after the Brazilian ran out of fuel.

And in the 1995 Canadian Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher did the same for Jean Alesi after the Frenchman, who had just won his first Formula 1 race, also ran out of fuel.

Just sums it up for Webber!

He definitely is as Vettel is so prominent. But although a good driver he never managed to become a great driver. Maybe that is because he was always no. 2 driver in any team he was in.

Yep, I don't really think we saw his full potential

I think Webber's decision to leave was following that race (can't remember which) when, despite orders, Vettel overtook for the win despite team orders.

Deffo! (I know the one you mean) I can't remember it either but when they came back after the race Webber made some comment as to what happened to 1.12 or something like that

Korean marshalls don't seem to be as well drilled as others.

Hamilton "Any Ideas"   Love it.

Wow - The Hulk did a great job of fending off Hammy.

He did indeed. He could go far....as long as there aren't too many vying for seats.

Did you hear that Rubins Barrichello wants to come back to F1?

Another home goal BBC for those of us that do not want Sky.

I'm sure they do it on purpose.  Double

I trust you've sent them a nasty letter?

What a disappointing weekend of Formula One. Not only did I mistakenly look at the BBC webpage noticing the result of qualifying, I then woke up this morning, turned on the TV only to see the presenters announce the result right at the end of the programme - forgetting it is shown live early on being Japan. Sometimes I despair at my stupidity !!!

Ummm.....!

I watched the qualifying on Saturday on their full rerun later in the day, but I got up at 6:30 this morning for the race live.

I think the main things that will be remembered about the qualifying will be Gutierez' car going on fire in the garage and Verne's car going on fire, after his engine blew, and causing the session to be Red Flagged.

The race itself was a bit less dramatic, but not without some excitement. Webber and Vettel were a bit slow off the start and Grosjean strormed into the lead round the outside of Vettel.

Hamilton meanwhile attempted to go up the middle but his right rear tyre clipped Vettel's front wing and got punctured. He got a new tyre, but the underside of the car was damaged and he had to retire a few laps later.

At the back Van de Garde and Bianchi collide and take each other off.

Rosberg gets a drive through penalty for unsafe release in pit lane.

Massa gets drive through penalty for speeding in the pit lane.

Ricciardo gets drive through penalty for gaining an advantage while tryi to pass Sutil.

Button and Perez both have slowish pit stops as there is a problem with the right rear tyre.

In the last 10 or so laps many of the cars are still close to each other and there are several passes and nearly passes.

Vettel passes Webber

Vettel passes Grosjean

Webber passes Grosjean

Alonso nearly passes Grosjean

Button passes Di Resta for P10

Raikkonen passes Hulkenberg

Just watched the repeat of the race. The best racing seems to always occur behind the lead driver.

Vettel "I'm not thinking about next week". You big liar, just not a credible answer.

Shame about Mark not getting the win as it would be nice for him and his fans.

Would have liked to have seen Kimi get the time to challenge Alonso as it would have been a nice marker for next season if he finished higher in the race.

Grosjean - good drive today, can take a lot of credit from that drive.

Hammy - such a shame as it looked from the start that he may have been up there challenging if it were not for the puncture.

I've had a marathon, trying to see it all.

Firstly we had guests on Saturday so we recordrd the qualifying. Sat down to watch it today and when I said to hubby about the delay between Q2 and Q3 he said he wasn't sure then if we had recorded it all then. Sat and watched to where they switched to BBC2 and knew fhat we had lost Q3, OK, I thought. It should be on the Red Button Channel. However when we switched to the Red Button Channel the qualifying had only just started, so I now had all of Q1, Q2 and a cut down rain delay period to get through before I could see the top ten shoot out. Was I actually going to see it all before the race came on? It was now 2pm and the race started at 4.

It finished at three however, but I still had a washing to put on and get some food for us all....and I only had an hour in which to do it!!!!

I had a feeling Vettel would have another win and it was not difficult for him once he had taken the lead save for the pit situation!

Thought the penalties for Hamilton and Massa were a bit harsh. And stopped us seeing a good old scrap between them.

Please Mercedes beat Ferrari in the constructors.

That's that then for a few months.
