It would seem so, there are few clubs that would keep  a manager now with a record like his this season.

But Feb to Oct is a bit rubbish IMO as opportunities go - especially as the team had been poor for several seasons prior to his arrival.

Completely agree CS, I'm not agreeing with the Aston Villa board at all, but unfortunately commenting on the state of play these days.

I was pretty miffed at the release of Stuart Gray at Sheffield Wednesday who IMO has stabilised the club and got them in a position which I felt was a good platform to build on and in maybe 2 or 3 years see us in the Premier League.

But I have to take my hat off to Carlos Carvalhal, he has so far this season put together (and got working) a bunch of players that seem to be getting decent results and playing football.

It's a shame that boards seem to chop and change managers after weeks in the job - I guess it's all about the money these days and how much they have to lose.

I reckon we've had more managers than goalkeepers during the PL era- and i doubt we even come close to the likes of Leeds and others!

Villa spent Β£50 during the summer on what looked like long-term prospects for Sherwood to coach/manage - that's a massive business investment - but now a new appointment might not be interested in them.

 That much

But seriously I know what you mean, there is always the prospect of a new manager having a completely different idea as to what type of player he wants and as such may have to sell to buy or dip into the loan market to rebuild the team, then you have the transition period where everything starts to come together.

I think Villa fans will hope that the new manager likes the squad and gets the "new manager bounce".

Lol Β£50m is what i meant!

Given the internal structure i wouldn't be surprised to see Brendan Rodgers near the top of any managerial "wish list" they may have.

Bang on. It's dross.

I don't watch enough SPL to really comment - but the poor showing from English teams in the CL recently is quite telling.

Thanks GJ

I have had a fabulous night thanks, not just the win but the way we won it. They played with so much confidence. Did not let Arsenal settle or get any rhythm and most of all we took our chances when presented.

There were 35,000 in Hillsborough tonight and the place rocked. I love a full house in full voice.

Now I can go to work tomorrow and have a little fun with my Arsenal fan colleague.

Not sure I am going to be able to sleep, the 5am start will be a rude awakening, but worth it.

I do hope you dump Man U out of the cup, you never know, we may meet or would you prefer the final.

You were saying...

  • Middlesbrough v Everton
  • Southampton v Liverpool
  • Stoke City v Sheffield Wednesday
  • Manchester City v Hull City

I thank you. I took too much on board last night.

Apparently the game against Everton takes place at 7:45 on Dec 1st and will be on the tellybox. Thus we are all hoping that the tickets will be cheap. I can't believe our run of form against the Lancashire teams. We drew with Liverpool but lost after thirty odd penalties, beat Manchester City outright, drew with United then beat them on penalties, and now its Everton's turn.

Garage Joe

Players who commit a foul and pick the ball up and walk off with it thereby stopping the other team gaining an advantage from the foul they have just committed? Why are they not booked??

Goalkeepers that blatantly waste time by either signalling players to come towards or go away from them...why are they not booked???

They should be given a small amount of time to take a goal kick or it should be changed to a corner...couldn't see much time wasting going on then

Has the rule about taking a goal kick changed? In the past it had to be taken from the same side as the ball went out. Now keepers seem to take it from either side

Players who are fouled and on falling over, the first thing you see most of them do is looked where the ref is and if he is going to give a foul or not

That's all for now...well until I see any more things that annoy me about the modern game, that is

Maybe we should start a thread EC...what pi**es you off about football

Think I prefer golf and horse racing.

Some of the pundits are getting more than they where when they where playing football

I think for me it would be what pi**es you off about sport in general, because I have seen and heard so many annoying things whatever the sport. A good example would be in the recent Rugby world cup, apparently the English team collectively spat out their dummies because they could not wear their 'preferred' headphones from the coach to the stadium because they were not a sponsor, another headphone company was. Well these chaps need to realise that it is the business of sport and they have to play by the rules of business.

But yes, go for it Moonie, start one.

Okies but not gonna use the 'P' word in a thread title though cause the mods will probably just pull it

How about this for a title Moonie - "What hacks you off about professional sport and sports people?"

A very even game last night. I think it speaks volumes about how far we have come as a side. We look quite comfortable even when Brighton had possession and looked threatening.

Have to take my hat off to Barry Bannan. That guy worked non stop all night and some of his crot field balls were sublime.

I am feeling quite optimistic about the season.

Just watching a Bundesliga game on the telly...

Throw in, player 'steals' ten yards, ref does nothing

Reminds me of a game from the not distant past. Throw in, player steals quite a few yards. Ref sends him back, opposing player standson the touch line, to stop the player taking the throw in from 'stealing' any more yards. Ref books him for 'unsportsmanlike' conduct. What's that all about?

Moonie

Ah! I seem to have made a mistake regarding Derby, although it was a local Derby! As it were.

Meanwhile, everyone is excited about our trip to Hull tomorrow, except me-I'm a little nervous. Hopefully this season's champions will be merciful and restrict their victory to 1-0.

Should everything go as planned I expect to be reasonably anaesthetised by some decent beer.

Garage Joe
