A lot of positive and optimistic stats were trotted out about the recent results achieved by Ireland under Trapattoni – unfortunately they could not replicate this in their first match at a major tournament.

 

I listened to a feature on 5Live last week recalling the adventures of Ireland under Jack Charlton – Paddy Bonner, David O’Leary and John Aldridge were giving their acconts of Euro ‘88, Italia ’90 and USA ’94.. What struck me most of all was that the pool of players Charlton had to pick from included quite a few from the top clubs – Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal and Everton. How many of the current Ireland squad are playing for the top English clubs?

I'm not sure whether wor Jackie had a big pool of players. He actively sought out players who had remote Irish ancestry, or who owned an Irish setter or two.

Yes i remember this -think Townsend might have been one that this was aimed at.
