It is strange - they started appearing around lunch time here - then there were literally thousands and I noticed them when walking the dog too - loads of them Nod

Here's a quote from The Telegraph newspaper a few days ago.

quote:
A SUPER ANT that forms colonies 100 times larger than native species and is resistant to domestic insecticides has been recorded in Britain for the first time.

The invasive pest ant Lasius neglectus looks the same as a common black garden ant but the number of workers in a colony is between 10 and 100 times greater.

The species is fatally attracted to electrical currents, meaning that the ants form swarms in fuse boxes and around electric cables, causing blackouts and, in some cases, fires.

Nice...

I had them in my flat yesterday. Noticed a few in my hallway (g/f flat). THEN I spotted a load more crawling around the doorframe of my airing cupboard. I have a phobia of ANYTHING like that. I phoned round a few people and nobody could come over IMMEDIATELY to help me. I was so distraught, I phoned a pest control company and they couldnt come out immediately either. They said that the best thing to do was to vacuum them up Disappointed - the vaccuum was IN the cupboard full of these ants. I tell u I cried like a baby Nod absolutely pathetic. I finally got hold of a neighbour... he thought someone had died!!! What a hero - he saved me Big Grin That was YESTERDAY - so are they still around today then?

No flying ants here yet! Frowner

I love flying ant day... is a cool phenomenon Big Grin

We've had a few today here in South London but not loads....there's normally tons of birds flying about eating them on the day but none today so we must have much more to come.

Daughter just said she's seen the odd isolated ant hill with a few swarming. (we're North Essex)

But I agree... there must be more to come. Its been almost unbearably 'muggy' here today, so I am quite surprised it hasn't happened.
