I was telling someone about this once and they thought I was making it up...it must be awful, its down to have too much summat or other in yer blood or summat, resulting in you giving off a stinky fish smell, so bad that other people can smell it on you....you have to change your diet and that to get the levels of summat or other down and reduce the smell.

Must be terrible to be a sufferer....

It used to be, but now with more people hearing about it it classed as 'uncommon'...I had never heard of it before, it was only discovered in the 70's.....awful illness.
I'm mocking a bit but on a serious note I can imagine it must be for those who suffer. That doc said there was different stuff they can take to alter the balances of the blood levels. What an awful thing to get though

My best friend at secondary school had this condition. I was really awful because we didn't know what it was and just thought she was smelly. I asked her once why her hands smelled of fish and she said it was the cat food!

I had to partner her in Country Dancing (don't laugh)y every week and my hands reeked by the end of it. She always had sweaty hands and anything she touched smelled. I had to rush off and wash my hands for fear of being sick.

My boyfriends friend went out with her but it soon was over because of the 100x worse smell 'down there' and everywhere else. Boys are just not very good at keeping things to themselves lol

It was years after we left school at that we learned about the condition she must have had... No one ever spoke about it and I don't see her anymore... I wonder if she still smells. She's divorced twice with 2 kids

1 in 1500 people.
is not my definition of rare. Sorry, I know you're an accountant...but as a social scientist that does not sound like a phenomenon or valid anomaly.
I used the word "rare" as the website (wrongdiagnosis . com) described it as such. The article I saw says this:

Fish-odor syndrome: Rare Disease

Office of Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Fish-odor syndrome is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This means that Fish-odor syndrome, or a subtype of Fish-odor syndrome, affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.
Source - National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Ophanet

Ophanet, a consortium of European partners, currently defines a condition rare when if affects 1 person per 2,000. They list Fish-odor syndrome as a "rare disease".

So the ORD says it's rare, but the Orphanet definition puts the condition just outside rare. But wthether the condition is technically rare or not makes little difference to those who suffer from it

aw I have heard of this before.    Its one of those things that stuck with me.   Can you imagine having this disorder?  You really would be justified in thinking "why me?"   I think this is probably my version of Josies "woman that had her face ripped off by a chimp"...   when I think about what it must be like to have Fish Odour Syndrome it makes me thankful for my lot in life really.
