SCOUTS GUIDE TO THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE

This is a straight 'colour by numbers' teen zombie movie.

Geeks, girls, the town erupts into a zombie nightmare, geeks are the only ones to save the day etc ...

So it's surprising how entertaining it is - funny, plenty of jump out of your skin moments, fast paced with no 'dips' in the action. And some real laugh out loud moments.

I really enjoyed it even though it's nothing new.

Not as good as : ZombieLand

Better than : This is the end

Anyone seen the Woody Allen film 'Magic in the Moonlight'?

Just realised that I missed this post...

Yes: I saw "Magic in the Moonlight" when it came out, and thought it was reasonably fun, but then I like the cast a lot. Not as good as "Midnight in Paris", but definitely one of the better recent Allen films.

I enjoyed Midnight in Paris, thought it was a nice idea and thoroughly entertaining. One I would recommend.

Last night I went to see The Man with the Golden Gun at the Cineworld Classic film night, they have been running a series of Bond films over 4 weeks. Not going to review it as everyone has seen it, but I enjoyed the experience in the cinema as I did when I saw Goldfinger last week. I will not be going to see Goldenye (can  you see a pattern here?) as I have already seen it at the cinema and I will not be seeing License to Kill as it was on the box the other night and I'm not the biggest Dalton fan.

I have however seen about 35 mins of Oblivion which I was getting into before falling asleep. I also saw The Town shown on Channel 5 the other night which to my surprise I rather enjoyed.

I ordered some stuff on the net the other day and to make the money up to free postage I ordered the Blu Ray version of Ex_Machina. I haven't seen it yet and dunno when I'll get round to it but the reports at the time seemed to be good  I hope it is

I do enjoy the science fiction genre and would also like to see Ex Machina. The trouble is there is so much stuff coming out I can't find the time to watch it all. I have fallen behind with all the Marvel Universe films !!!

Yes I like that kind of stuff too (although I do watch other genres)

Edge of tomorrow is much better than Oblivion

It is one on my ever so long list of films to see.

I enjoyed "Edge of Tomorrow" at the cinema. I found out just today that a sequel is planned: apparently both Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are on board, but goodness knows how the plot will work out...

I believe my local picture house is showing a Captain America triple bill this Thursday night. I wouldn't mind seeing the new one - but wouldn't fancy sitting through all 3 in the one sitting - and on a work night!

That's the problem with these multi-screenings: they're always set up to finish with screening the new film in the series just after midnight on the morning of its release day - which is usually a Friday. Totally unrealistic for most people unless you take a day off...

I watched Civil War last Sunday night and the place was heaving - i guess it's more than coincidence releasing such a film heading into a bank holiday weekend.

I enjoyed this third installment of Captain America. Although i really don't think i could have sat through all three together even on a weekend - this one alone ran at just under 2hrs 30mins i think.

DEADPOOL

Found this very entertaining, funny, action-packed ... and had a unique character of its own.

Lots of wise cracks which were properly laugh-out-loud,

"You again - could Marvel not be bothered to spend more money and have three action heroes in this film"

... plus monologues to camera and slo-mo stuff that aint new but fun anyway.

All in all it was great - definitely best movie I've watched this year.

KRAMPUS - I've been wanting to watch this for yonks - the trailer looked so good.

. . . and it was good just not as good as I'd hoped.

Far too much time was spent on the family and their issues and not enough on building tension and the folklore of Krampus.

In the end it was almost like National Lampoons Xmas Vacation.

Sadly a missed oppertunity

Just given up on "The Hateful Eight".  Easily Tarantino's worst film.  So stagey and so boring.  Stagey is not something I'd expect of a Tarantino film but that's what it was.  I expect there's a bloodfirsty climax to warrant its 18 cert but after watching 90 minutes of boring dialogue in the same room and with an hour still to go, I'd had enough.

Yes: there is a bloody climax (it's a Tarantino film, after all!)

Funnily enough, I was watching Mark Kermode talk about this on "Film 24" this afternoon. "The Hateful Eight" was his DVD pick of the week, but even he had to admit that it's at least half an hour too long...

On the plus side (and I also agree with Kermode on this), the soundtrack's pretty good (again: it's a Tarantino film!   ). You'll have missed the closing track, which is this (taken, you'll note, from an earlier Western):

Ride Along : A hilarious cop caper featuring Ice Cube (grow up) and Kevin Hart.

Or at least that's what they'd have you believe

In truth it's a hopeless rehash of all the previous "he shouldn't be there and its' gonna cause mayhem" type movies.

Predictable, dull and all been done better years ago.

Unbelievably there's a sequel . . . in Miami - it should be called,

"Ride Along - money for old rope 2"

News that Terry Gilliam is intending to restart making his Don Quixote film.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-36323322
He has been trying to make the film for many years. It almost went into production in 2000 but didn't (the subject of the 2002 documentary Lost in La Mancha).

Whether his film does ever get made, only time will tell. Orson Welles did start making a film of Don Quixote back in the 50s but it was never completed. What was filmed has been patched together in a Spanish version and is on Youtube in 4 parts:

There are no English subtitles.

El Loro

10, CLoverfield Lane :

This is an odd and rather pointless movie.

It's links to the original Cloverfield are tenuous at best .

This is a hostage movie - nothing more. And all done before.

The main protagonist goes through the typical gambit of emotions - imagine what a hostage would go through - she goes through it.

Having said that it's interesting and shocking at times - not dull at least.

Until the end which I rather bizarrely linked to the original movie - loosely.

Quite odd . . .

Score : 5/10
