I don`t know how rich she was but I gather she used her own money to make records and put on concerts.
People still dispute whether she was trying and failing or whether the whole thing was a joke.

I don't know much about her, Brisket, but listening to her made me chuckle. There was a West End play made about her life a year or so ago and with Maureen Lipman (I think) playing Florence

There's a beautiful clarity to her voice.

Going back a bit but speaking voices, Glynis Johns, have never heard a voice like hers. She was in Bedknobs and Broomsticks. And Fenella Fielding who was sound to have a voice like melted chocolate.
Have you never been to Wales Squiggle? Glynis' voice is not that unusual, but it is nice ...a bit reminiscent of Cerys Matthews - another interesting singing voice
I looooved Fenella Fielding's voice...she was great when she was doing all that comedy flirty stuff

I have to say that travelling back from Mahon on the local service bus last Thursday was 1980's deja vu - and the children just would NOT let me sing. **sulks**
Anyway ... the local radio station played a Barbra Streisand/Donna Summer song from the 80's - Enough is Enough. Bloody hellfire those two could hang on to a note like a Scotsman in the January sales....no immediate offence to any Scots members intended. I've already noted the remark about Glynis Johns.
Which also brings me to Miss Gloria Gaynor.
Now if we're talking speaking voices then Lauren Bacall and Honor Blackman have to be in the top ten.

Ooer I'm puzzled now, 'cos Glynis Johns didn't have a Welsh accent?

yes she did, depends what film you saw her in as to how strong it was, it was just poshed up for an English film audience, like Anthony Hopkins and Burton did
