We have a couple of films that we like to watch over the festive season.  My favourites are:

'In the Bleak Mid-winter' which is a tale about an out-of-work actor (Michael Maloney) who, over the Christmas period,  puts on a production of 'Hamlet' in a church that is under threat of closure.  He gathers a group of eccentric characters as his actors and attempts to get them ready for their performance.  The result is a very entertaining and witty film, quite moving at times.  Produced by Kenneth Branagh and starring, amongst others, Richard Briers, Celia Imrie, John Sessions and Jennifer Saunders.  Worth a watch, in my opinion.  Not that you'll get a chance unless it's on the telly as, for some strange reason, it's not available on DVD and we have to rely on our old video recording.

'Blackadder's Christmas Carol'   A parody of Dickens' tale.  Scrooge taking his revenge on the scroungers and do-gooders is hilarious.  Get in, Ebenezer!

Miracle on 34th Street, Home Alone, Scrooge (Alastair Sim version) and The Muppet's Christmas Carol are also favourites.

On the recommendation of others, I've got Elf to watch on DVD this year.

I'm sure there are more but I can't think of them atm.

The Muppet's Christmas Carol is my favourite thing to watch at Christmas

We have good taste, ladies.

Another of my favourite festive films is the Alan Ayckborn play 'Absurd Person Singular'.  Made by the BBC, I believe, back in the 1980s,  it was shown once and then never seen again.  Another one that didn't make it to DVD.  I think this probably means that most of the films I like are so ghastly that no-one can bear to see them again so they disappear without trace.  'Absurd Person Singular' had an excellent cast, though, including Michael Gambon, Prunella Scales, Nicky Henson, Cheryl Cambell, Geoffrey Palmer and Maureen Lipman.  Wickedly funny.
