I need some help! The US have given B a tourist visa He applied in February and it was approved in September If you don't already know, he broke his elbow at the beginning of Sept so it's been really hectic and I haven't organised anything for our holibobs yet!

Our plan is to start off in San Francisco for a couple of days, go to the conference he actually got the visa to attend, then to LA for maybe 4 days, then Vegas for a couple of days (including a day trip to the Grand Canyon)

If anyone has been to any of these places and has recommendations of places to see, restaurants, hotels etc etc I'd love to hear them! I said Ducky in the title as I know she has been recently Oh, also, hiring a car too so advice on that and driving on the wrong side of the road would be appreciated too

I think the grand canon is closed.

The driving on the wrong side of the road is easy in the states as they have very few roundabouts so you don't have that panic when driving up to it.   Plus you can turn right on red unless it states otherwise.

We're considering a road trip right across the states but it'll be another couple of years when I feel more comfortable leaving the Boy for a month or so on his own.

Have a blast whatever you do

It was nearly 20 years ago but I found Alcatraz interesting but Golden Gate Bridge rusty and disappointing. Never saw so many gay men in my life as in SF  but disappointingly I didn't try the nightlife. Its also quite cold with a chilly wind coming in off the Sea.

In LA I enjoyed Disneyland and The Universal Studios Tour and the walk of stars etc. I think outside one of the famous theatres [the Oscars one?] if you hang round long enough, random buses come along and ask you if you want to be audience members on some well known chat shows etc. That happened to some friends of mine. Did a tour of some Movie Stars homes which was a laugh.

LA itself seemed pretty nondescript and even Melrose Avenue [posh shops] was a bit meh.

Wow...lucky you going to Vegas! And The Grand Canyon  Only saw it from the air, it was lovely though. Have a great time Saz

It is. You walk round the [permanent] studio lots + get deja vu cos you've seen them in old movies  Its like "I've seen that fountain! I know that town square"!

When are you going Saz ?

Wow - you were there Saz? Ground zero must be have been a sad place even 4 years on?

Hi Kasper  I don't know you but welcome back to Gaga

Oooooooh Saz! I'm so excited for you!

I cant help much with LA, as we just used and abused them for the airport..... but San Francisco was AMAZING!

I also can't help much with the food, cos we Duds is so fussy we couldn't be that adventurous

I highly recommend Angel Island! We ended up there as part of a package ticket to Alcatraz cos the normal tickets had sold out....but I enjoyed that part far more than Alcatraz! (If you are thinking of going to Alcatraz, order your tickets online NOW, they book up quite a way in advance).

As you are going to be driving, I would recommend driving out of San Francisco for a bit of an explore. (it's warmer ) If you cross the Golden Gate bridge and head up the hills, there are some roads with some great views of SF and the bridges.

My only advice for Las Vegas is to wear decent shoes to avoid burning your feet on the pavements  But I think you are going at a much more sensible time of year than we did.....so that may not apply

I can't really help much with the Grand Canyon either....cos if you're day tripping from Vegas you're probably going to a different part than we did. But, OMG you're going to love it! And you'll probably be going to Native American run section.....so it should be open

I'm not sure how helpful I've been.....but seriously, you're gonna have a fab time without my help, believe me

Oh, and the driving is fine!  Driving over there is far more relaxed (slow ) than here, so you will have plenty of time to think about which side of the road you need to be on

Ducky
I want to go back SOOOOOO much!

And I know you're not going there, but if you ever get the chance to visit Yosemite National Park, DO IT! I've wanted to visit the Grand Canyon my whole life (I cried when I got there ), but for pure astounding beauty Yosemite beat it hands down! I will go back one day, and spend MUCH longer there!

Made that mistake before

It tastes like vomit, really does, proper vomit taste. I have only spat chocolate out twice, once with marzipan in it and the second US vomit chocolate. I would be thin as a rail if I lived in the states, unless they import Dairy Milk.

Ducky you've made me all excited now Good tip on driving out for a good view of the Golden gate bridge and San Francisco, I think there is a point somewhere that has good views? I was reading about the weather (fog ) and apparently Sept-Nov is the best time to go

Did you book with a company to go to the Grand Canyon? There are a few online and I'm not sure who to go with

Any hotel recommendations? I feel like you said you stayed somewhere really cool - though maybe it wasn't you!
