The future of the Falkland Islands should rest with the people who live there. The residents have in the past indicated that they wish to remain British. The current tension is caused by the immineni 30th anniversary of the invasion by Argentina on 2 April 1982 and by Argentina claiming the rights over oil found offshore.

Provided that the oil drilling is taking place within 12 nautical miles (about 14 ordinary miles) around the islands, it is within the territorial waters limits recognised under international law and therefore part of the Falklands.
