Today I got an e mail from "pay pal" telling me that a payment of £42 something was billed from Skype.

I immediately smelled a rat;

PayPal is one word, it has no gap.
Skype is a free service, I've never been charged for it.
They didn't have my name or address in the email.
There was a link to a "dispute centre" at the bottom-
PayPal don't send links in their emails.

I have reported it and deleted it. I did not click on that link.

Please be vigilant everyone, do not fall for such scams, never ever click on links and only sign in directly on the main website

There are charges for Skype in certain situations (but I think oner would be aware if they had started a contract with Skype).

I've had that one before. I forwarded it onto Pay Pal fisching (sp). Apparently PayPal always address you by name - never Dear User (or whatever). I actually got halfway through filling out the attatchment they sent before smelling a rat

I don't use these sites but someone on my FB was warning people not to click on the links 

had a few of these - always delete straight away + the bank and tax refund ones  also

Make sure you only ever sign in on their site, never through an email link

I had one today from someone who wanted me to launder a shedload of money for a very generous commission!

No good asking you to launder money ... you'd break the bloody washing machine!

If you get any emails form financial institutions that you do business with be it a bank or paypal never click the link in the email, always use your bookmarked or Favourites link. 

That way you know you are going to the legitimate site
