I grew up with wallpaper like that. My parents also had lino in the kitchen that I could see faces in, but then again I was most probably tipsy if I had my face pressed against the floor 
When I was a kid we had tiles in our bathroom that I always called 'chicken tiles' because I could see the outline of a chicken in them.
