I've never been on FB but I think I might start now. I don't know how it works, I don't know what people do with it or on it, I don't know why it exists at all but it does so I thought I'd have a look at it.

FB pros and cons. What are they?
Privacy: who can and can not find me on FB?
FB groups: are they like newsgroups or are they just something you subscribe to and you get 'news' every now and again?
Friends: I don't have any, how do you find them?

I'm  taking on the great Social Network here folks, don't let me down. Your advice will directly affect how much of a potential nuisance I may or may not be so choose your words carefully!

I do FB - I have my privacy settings set so no-one can see me that I don't want to!
There are alot of folk from ch4 over there that don;t come on here & some that do both like myself.
Games apps are very popular - but my advice is DON'T do them - cos once you start accepting requests, they will never stop!
*touchwood* I have never had any problems with FB!

Some of your information is often passed on to interested parties and while Facebook makes money you may become pestered.
The search facility is poor and inconsistent.

So people who want to spam you can get to you if you don't have your privacy settings super-high?

Yes they can.  I admit that my settings may be too restricted. But you can play it by ear and see how it goes.

You can adjust later if necessary. You can also block people.

So test it out, but with caution.

I've mentioned this site before, but I've found it really useful:
http://www.sophos.com/security...t-practice/facebook/
I would suggest allowing yourself a little time to work through it: it's well-worthwhile in the long run.
One of the rather worrying aspects of F*c*book is that the safest settings are not only generally not set by default, but are often extremely difficult to find unless you know what you're looking for. For example, I'd bet a fair amount of money that most FB users don't know there's an "Only Me" option...

Another thing that's often not appreciated is how much information those apparently innocuous games and apps try to access. And you can't restrict the amount of your information an app shares with its author - it's all or nothing (although you can restrict the range of friends an app will share your info with).
As an example: I installed an "IQ Test" app a while back. After working through the Sophos articles, I had a look at the information it required access to: it was an eye-opener.
Firstly, it required access to my "basic information". This is probably fair enough, as they may want to do some analysis of IQ spread based on things like gender. It also requires access to my Profile information". Again, this is fair enough, as a "proper" IQ test result has to be calibrated for a person's age.
However... This app also "requires" access to my "family and relationships" and "photos and videos". Now why on earth would an IQ Test need to access videos and photos that I've uploaded?
This becomes more worrying when you remember that F*c*book are going to let some apps access (if given permission) people's home addresses and phone numbers...

Another thing: that IQ Test app also has access to my friends' information, such as birthdays, political and religious views, interests, etc. This is very important to remember: I may restrict access to my information to "friends only", but if a friend installs an app (or has their account hacked), that info could be accessed by others without me ever knowing it...
