Just thinking.. surely he couldn't have been acting alone? Though the shooting started well after the bomb..

unless he set the bomb on a timer or used a remote device via mobile phone then had time to get on the boat to the island??

I think it's unlike though that he worked alone

I don't know that anyone can Col. It's just up to people to be extra vigilant and not 'crack'. Show them we will not give in

I think you are right, that is the only response we can give, but they are devastating.

I know, I think it's a case of pick ourselves up and dust ourselves down and carry on

I know.. think it was that fella whose twitter link I posted, he reported that they had claimed it on a forum , then almost immediately afterwards said " it wisnae us!" - the meeja picked up on the first bit , but didn't seem to notice the second .

The Telegraph reports:

"The man arrested in connection with the Utoya island shooting was named last night by the the justice ministry as Anders Behring Breivik, a 32-year-old Norwegian national. Investigators believe he was also involved in the bombing, but have not ruled out the possibility that he had accomplices."

BBC radio says he is known for extreme nationalistic views. At least 80 were shot on the island. Some people tried to pretend that they were dead by lying down with the bodies, but he just went round with a handgun systematically shooting them in the head.

Oslo, Norway:  A homegrown terrorist set off a deadly explosion in downtown Oslo before heading to a summer camp dressed as a police officer to commit one of the deadliest shooting sprees in history, killing at least 80 people as terrified youths ran and even swam for their lives, police said on Friday.

Police initially said about 10 were killed at the forested camp on the island of Utoya, but some survivors said they thought the toll was much higher. Police director Oystein Maeland told reporters early on Saturday they had discovered many more victims.

"It's taken time to search the area. What we know now is that we can say that there are at least 80 killed at Utoya," Maeland said. "It goes without saying that this gives dimensions to this incident that are exceptional."

A suspect in the shootings, and the Oslo explosion that killed seven people, was arrested. Though police did not release his name, Norwegian national broadcaster NRK identified him as 32-year-old Anders Behring Breivik and said police searched his Oslo apartment overnight.

NRK and other Norwegian media posted pictures of the blond, blue-eyed Norwegian.

A police official said the suspect appears to have acted alone in both attacks, and that "it seems like that this is not linked to any international terrorist organizations at all." The official spoke on condition of anonymity because that information had not been officially released by Norway's police.

Which would suggest that the camp was his real target all along, There must be something SERIOUSLY wrong with this guy in that case. What did he think killing lots of young people would achieve?

Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing

These young people were at a summer camp run by the ruling Labour party....so in essence a lot of them were the future of the Labour party in Norway...the Prime Minister was due there today to give a talk....

I can't get my head round the number of people he has killed but at least for once a shooter has been taken alive before he turned the gun on himslef so they may be able to get the answers as to why...

Croctacus

God, it's worse every time I look at the headlines - I just can't get my head around it.

it's also interesting (if that's the word) how the initial reports have changed.  When it was first reported on the radio yesterday (before the island shootings) they were suggesting the work of muslim immigrants.   No jumping to conclusions there then ............      It just shows (as some friends and I were discussing last night) that radical extemists no matter what colour or religion are all as dangerous as each other.
