She was always one of my favourite characters, much prefer her to annoying, Laurel.

'Emmerdale': Samantha Giles to return as Bernice

Former Emmerdale star Samantha Giles has announced that she is returning to the soap.

The actress will start work at the ITV1 drama again next month, reprising the role of Ashley Thomas's ex-wife Bernice Blackstock.

Giles, confirming her comeback, told the Daily Star Sunday: "It's so lovely to be asked back to Emmerdale. The show is on top form and I'm really looking forward to being part of the team again."

Meanwhile, Emmerdale's series producer Stuart Blackburn told the newspaper: "Bernice Blackstock has always been one of Emmerdale's most popular characters. Linked to Nicola, Ashley, Diane, Rodney and her daughter Gabby, she remains right at the heart of the show.

"With the recent separation of Ashley and Laurel, and problems ahead for Diane, the time is right for Bernice to come back and really stir things up."

Bernice originally appeared on Emmerdale between 1998 and 2002, memorably having an affair with chef Carlos Diaz during her marriage to Ashley. She later made a brief return in 2004.

I'd like to see Bernice support Ashley, and take the wind out of smug Laurel's sails in the process.

I hate what the producers/scriptwriters have done with Laurel's character and I hate her pairing with Marlon.

I agree Yogi, the way they have made Laurel behave so callously to Ashley has made me and Marlon's too good for her.

Problems ahead for Diane?

That's how I feel too. Why did they have to turn Laurel in to such a heartless evil cow, she was always so sweet.

But having Bernice back might start me watching more regularly again.

And while we are talking about Emmerdale please please can Charity get her long-awaited comeuppance. I'm fed up with her dishing it out and always coming up smelling of roses.

It's not so much what they have done with Laurel, it's what they did with Ashley that gets me.

One day he's a perfectly normal man, the next he is some psyco age phobic dad beater. Didn't ring true at all. And having gone down that route there was nothing that they could do with the storyline.

Bringing Bernice back is a stroke of genius

But, Carl King though ... Good job Temps isn't here anymore, she'd be in bits

I feel like that too about Ashley - I find it hard to watch since they changed his character beyond belief.

Even though I don't watch religiously now (no pun intended) I didn't like that story line either.

Had they done the story line whereby Sandy was developing some sort of dementia and behaving in the frustrating ways dementia sufferers can, then they could have shown Ash becoming increasingly frustrated etc etc etc, but just to turn him in to a Dad beater seemed odd.

Then again I suppose they might have seen it as him having a breakdown after the crap he went through with Laurel & Marlon.
