I Sky+'d the Elvis programmes on BBC4 and watched the last one today. I found it a fascinating insight into someone who was quite literally unique. I found myself really liking him, Priscilla and Jerry Schilling were very touching in the way that they so obviously remember him with deep love. Also there was a track partly played in there (As Long As I Have You) that I haven't heard since I was about 16, I downloaded it and hearing it again took me straight back to the feeling I had when I listened to it then.

In these times when we have all seen so many really awful 'Elvis Impersonators' it was so good to see him at his best, such a handsome guy and so talented. What could he have been without the Col. taking him for every cent and signing him up for bum deals just so he (the Col.) could take his cut.

My dad was a big fan of Elvis (he still is) so I grew up listening to his music. He was amazingly talented and it was tragic that his life ended the way it did.

I grew up listening to him too, my dad loved him (my dad thought he WAS him but that's a whole other thread

)

I saw the Comeback '68 concert over Christmas (the one with him wearing the black leather - think that's what the concert was called?) and it just blew me away. Was mesmerising to watch. He certainly was unique, he had a stage presence that I've never seen before. Such a shame he was haunted by so many demons.

My advice, don't go near any biography, they tend to be hatchet jobs. Those who really loved him never wrote books about him. Those BBC4 programmes will probably be on iPlayer, they are absolutely riveting, an intimate picture of him by those who truly cared about the guy. I ended up liking Elvis so much, he was so generous and full of love. OK he had major faults like being a real male chauvinist (the reason Priscilla couldn't live with him, leave the lil lady at home and chase the girls like a bachelor) but he was so full of love you can see it shining out of him, and so talented, he knew exactly how he wanted his records to sound. The Col. even messed with his records to squeeze more tracks on an LP (by speeding up the tracks

) so the Col. could make more dollars.

I grew up on Elvis, now there was a real star with true talent, funny thing though I was talking to a female freind of mine a few years ago and I asked herif she thought Elvis was good looking, she said he was too good looking, how can a man be too good looking?, if I was a woman I would deffo had fancied him, I bet he slept with more women than I've had cups of tea.

My mum had a 78 of his entitled "Teddy Bear" and I can remember jumping and cavorting around the front room at a pre-school age. She also used to drag me to see all of his films. Anything that made her happy made me happy.

Not at all. Me too! However as a child I enjoyed the music as descibed above ^^^^ It's what we describe as a Michael Jackson embarrassment scenario. If we want to have a laugh at my son's expense we play the video of him doing MJ moves at a Holiday Kamp talent show. He was very much into MJ at the time. Not that we are suggesting that Elvis had an unfortunate attitude to kids you understand.

With MJ, I love the Jackson 5 music, and even some of Jacko's later stuff (Off the Wall, Thriller). I just ended up detesting him as a person, even before all the kiddie stuff. He thought he was some kind of messiah. He wasn't. He was just a bloke with meat and 2 veg who could sing and dance aswell and made it in the business. Overhyped and totally unnecessary.

GJ - that's one sure way of stopping your son getting out of line!

How embarrassing - most parents just dig out the baby photos when their grown-up kids start bringing boyfriends or girlfriends home. But you've got something even better in the arsenal..
