I know a few members are from the North East, and might be aware of the campaign to stop the council removing the statue of the Marquess of Londonderry from the market place, which has been there since 1861. Well today they have gone ahead and removed it.

Freindliest people I have ever met in my life.Went up their with my OH many moons ago and he popped to the bank and left me alone in a pub.Next thing, the couple next to me invited me to join them. Then I was invited on to a house party(had never met these folk before).By the time he came back had our social calender for the week made up.
Sorry for hijacking the thread to say that!!

Really? I had no idea. No doubt t'will be on Look North later. Can anyone remember the significance of how many legs equestrian statues stand on?

Bliddy councils have destroyed my city!
Why did they remove it? Where are they moving it to?

Is it not something to do with how the rider died?
Mazz I love Durham, it's definitely where my heart calls home. Every time I drive down there to visit my parents, when I come along towards Durham from the A1, the road curves and as you come around the bend the Cathedral just looms right up in front of you, makes me choke every time I see it.

Not sure where they are moving it too, it shouldn't be moving anywhere!
Crossy, can you recall a story that the statue was originally built to go on top of Penshaw monument?

Mo don't tell him about the horse, it might ruin his night.
Now I've got myself all Durham. The beautiful cathedral. The year I graduated Durham Uni, was the first year they allowed congregation to take place in the cathedral, how thrilled was I !!!

I didn't know that either. I was at a wake there btw, a coupla weeks ago. I do know a story about someone who took his family on a rowing boat beyond prebends and narrowly avoided going over the wear weir. Having said that if we had we might have found a load of jewelry and stuff.
They removed the horse?!

Well, damn! I actually thought I knew something without having to google it first!
Been there once, in the pishing down rain. Lovely city, even so.
I cant believe the council have condoned the removal of the horse, the market square will never be the same.the Cathedral was one of the Queen mothers favourite places. I was shocked the other day when a friend that was born and bred and still lives 9 miles from the city told me she had never been in the Cathedral even thou she often goes into Durham.
Awww! What a shame. Seeing those pics of Durham City makes me homesick for oop north east all over again.

But what would they know?
I found this in the QI forum http://www.qi.com/talk/viewtopic.php?p=284265#284265
Just for crossy.
Don't know how the photo looks elsewhere, but here it seems as though the poster is implying that I may have ingested some form of hallucinogenic preparation before my rowing boat miscalculation.
Ooooh I just told Chefboy and he was shocked and cross. Blimey, I really didnt think he'd be the sort to give a fuck!
Chefboys dad (the fountain of all knowledge) says its just been taken down for restoration. Everyone can breathe a sigh of relief.
Crossy, it looks strange on my screen too, maybe I should have altered the size of it before I posted it.
Mo it might be being restored, but as far as I know it's not being put back in the market place.

I spent a very bad hangover looking at that statue.

I used to lodge in the castle at Durham University during the student vacations. In the Norman corridor bit. They do B&B. You can even stay in the Bishop's Suite!
The horse apparently has not tongue.

The rooms are. They have two doors to keep the noise from the common room/ corridor out.
The dining room was like the one out of Harry Potter though and those wooden staircases creaked like mad everytime you walked on them. At least they didn't realign themselves I suppose.

Yep..that's the one.
I have never been there but heard it is beautiful, and the people are really friendly, terrible about that statue though, is it going for ever or are the council refurbishing it?
Durham Cathedral was in Harry Potter.
